Exhaust pipe shapes.
 
Ok, so weve all seen huuuuge exhaust pipes, square ones & multiple ones too. S'far as I know the rice boys put those rediciulously huge pipes on thier cars to make it sound more grumbly & maybe look more powerfull too.
Well, I was walking to work the other day & I saw a chopper with the exhaust pipes kind of folded at the end, so the pipe was normal circular but the end was like a vertical slit. My Q is has anyone tried this with a car? I figure if you did it right it could be like a couple of horizontal slits in the back bumper, almost a stralth exhaust.
Anyone got some info?

i know the motorcycle you are talking about (not by name)

my concern would be that it would create too much backpressure, at least on larger engines. a V8 needs to spit out a lot more hot air than a V-twin.

the closest i can think of is the bowtie exhaust (which i think is ugly personally) where the tip of the exhaust is bent into a Chevy bowtie. other than that i've never seen the actual exhaust tip bend into anything.

you want "stealth" exhaust? dump it.

note: the " " not being a jerk and correcting spelling, but cause if you dump your exhaust there will be nothing stealth about it audibly :D

I've never seen anything of the sort.
There are some almost rectangular, but none that I would classify as slits.
If anyone finds a pic, please post.

Tech's right about the back-pressure. Gotta be able to push the volume (not the sound) and let the engine breathe. A skinny slit would have to stretch across the entire back of the vehicle.

You could fake the slit.

Make the END of the pipe have the slit and then put some larger concealed holes on the bottom of the pipe where the majority of the exhaust would actually exit the pipe. Can't see any downside to this approach.

If you lived in a colder climate, however, it may look kinda gay when the exhaust steam was leaving the BOTTOM of the pipe instead of the end.

Just an idea.

You're forgetting that there are emissions regulations that don't look too kindly on holes in the muffler other than the ones at either end. At least in California they'd have a problem with it. Also, it probably wouldn't sound great. Anyone that's had a rotted muffler knows the sound all too well.

So, Why not do that? If the slit was two cm's high & 4 feet wide wouldnt that give enough space for the exhaust & the engine to breathe?

if they put that exhaust tip on a car it would be like having a straight pipe.. the purpse of the muffler is to "muffle" the sound of the exhaust... ever hear a car with an exhaust leak? thats what it would sound like.

i'd rather hear a bumble bee sound (ricer tip) then a loud exaust, pointless to boot..

You got a good point, I have seen them on bikes before, but maybe there is more exhust coming out of a car and a slit would cut power

I don't think anybody is talking about perforating/removing/modifying the actual muffler. I think any cosmetic changes to the exhaust opening could all be done on the post-muffler pipe/tip, a la the Chevrolet "bow tie."

Any mods to the pipe/tip after the muffler would have negligible effects on sound and emissions.

And to tell you the truth, I'm pretty sure the muffler has little or no effect on emissions, either. That's the job of the catalytic converter. The cat con DOES have an effect on the sound of the exhaust, however (just ask anybody who's pulled their cat out to increase flow.)

I think that a 1" x 4' opening WOULD provide enough of an opening for the exhaust if the feeder pipe between the muffler and the "long slit" opening had a bit of thought put into it. You'd have to think about how to hang that big wide thing across the back of the car, as well.

Its possible but I think it would be best to try this out while you have a tap in the exhaust right before the cat and connected to a pressure gauge so you could determine how much psi of backpressure it is creating. Backpressure isnt the worst thing in the world but when it comes to a car it doesnt help at all.

I've seen Camaros with similar exhaust tips. Looked about 1.5 - 2 inches high. Probably could get them lower and wider. Something like this:

Also didn't the original Pontiac GTOs come with a lever so you could open the exhaust? It's probably not street legal anymore. I have seen street/strip cars with blockouts you could remove to open the exhaust system up at the track.

Those tip look good on the Harleys I've seen with those tips but if you wanted to stealth the exhaust entirely probably easier to just cut the tip back under the bumper so it's even and dumping straight down.

I dont know shit about cars really so, Yeah, I was talking about cosmetic changes.

Also: Dont people hang massive skirting spoiler dealys onto the back of thier cars? I mean isnt that one area that is constantly "tuned" or changed anyway.
