end of world...as we knew it

...A Porsche diesel ,a 4 door Porsche and an electric one to

Porsche Cayenne
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By ARJEN BONGARD, AUTOMOTIVE NEWS EUROPE

Porsche will introduce a diesel-powered car by the middle of 2009, an industry newsletter said.

The German sports car maker will take the diesel engine--most likely for its Cayenne premium SUV--directly from Volkswagen, thereby saving substantial development costs. Porsche controls 31 percent of VW shares and has an option to raise its shareholding further.

The AID newsletter, citing Porsche sources, said Porsche executives have overcome their long-time reservations about diesel engines.

Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking has said repeatedly that the company constantly evaluates the commercial feasibility of putting a diesel engine in one or more of its models. Last year, he told Automotive News Europe that because of the additional costs and relatively low sales volume of Porsche cars, he didn’t think such a move would make sense.

A Porsche spokesman said Friday that the issue remains under discussion internally. Porsche sources said no decision has been made.

Porsche, which currently uses only gasoline engines, has decided to introduce a hybrid version of the Cayenne in 2010, AID said. Whether hybrids will power other Porsche models depends on whether new technology will make it possible to substantially reduce battery size.

At the moment, the spokesman said, lithium ion batteries are still too large to fit into Porsche sports cars. A solution may be available for the Panamera, a four-door coupe the company plans to launch next year.

Let us now mourn the passing of Porsche as we know it and start looking for a good condition 911/944/928/ right now.

I can see a move in the near future toward high performance diesels. What about the Audi R10 turbo diesel that won all those races? I think Porsche sees that writing on the old Berlin Wall. That R10 is an awesome vehicle.

I just can't get excited over a 4000 rpm redline.

what about 811 ft lbs of torque?!!! and note that comment below about it being so "QUIET"

The main novelty of the R10 is its engine: a TDI turbodiesel engine, running on Shell V-Power Diesel. It is a 5.5 L (335.6 ci) all-aluminium bi-turbo 90° V12, with common rail direct injection of more than 1600 bar (23,206 psi). Its output should be 485 kW (650 hp) (regulated) and 1100 N·m (811 ft·lbf) of torque, and its usable power band is between 3000 and 5000 rpm. Its benefits are a broad range of usable power, high torque and economy.

Two Garrett TR3076R turbochargers limited by the regulations to 2.94 bar (42.64 psi) absolute breathe through two 39.9 millimetres (1.6 in) intake air restrictors. It uses the latest Bosch Motronic (MS14) management, provided by Bosch Motorsport, 1600 bar piezo injectors, and makes a low noise for a race car. It can be difficult to hear the R10 on a track when other cars are present because of the much lower noise level.
