BMW 1 Series Coupe

This ride is just hot. If there is a car that I'm interested in spending some money and not a ridiculous amount of money on, it's this car.

Quote:
THE NEW BMW 1 SERIES COUPE:
BMW’s 128i and 135i Coupes Come to America in 2008

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – June 30, 2007, 6PM EDT… BMW will introduce a modern and authentic performance coupe that draws inspiration from its iconic 2002 models of some 40 years ago. The next BMW legend, the 1 Series Coupe, represents the core BMW philosophies of pure performance and premium design. By combining sporty rear-wheeldrive dynamics, agile handling, powerful engines and seating for four, the 1 Series Coupe will reinvent the niche that the legendary BMW 2002 created.

On sale in the spring of 2008, the 1 Series Coupe will be available in two versions; the 128i and the 135i. Powered by a 3.0-liter, 230 horsepower inline 6-cyinder engine that generates 200 lb-ft of torque, the 128i Coupe will feature Valvetronic valvetrain management and aluminum/magnesium construction—core elements of BMW’s EfficientDynamics. The powerful 135i Coupe features BMW’s twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine that produces 300 horsepower and an incredible 300 lb-ft of torque from as low as 1,400 rpm. With its direct piezo gasoline injectors, twin low-mass turbochargers and air-to-air intercooling, optimum performance and economy is achieved with no loss in engine response. For the 135i Coupe, acceleration from 0-62 mph is accomplished in 5.3 seconds and top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. Both engines feature on-demand engine coolant pumps that improve fuel economy and reduce parasitic losses for increased output.

Handsome looks with sporting intentions
The new 1 Series Coupe combines unique, dynamic and unmistakable design elements with a powerful and muscular body. The greenhouse with its characteristic “Hofmeister kink” is moved rearward and offers a particularly nimble look with its long hood. The short overhangs, long wheelbase and large frameless doors sit on a body with a striking shoulder line for a modern interpretation of BMW’s characteristic look. On the 135i Coupe, an M Aerodynamic Kit is standard.

The 1 Series boasts aggressive rear end styling. The trunklid has an integrated spoiler chiselled into the rear end of the car to accentuate the short rear section. On the 135i, an additional lip spoiler provides greater downforce on the rear end at high speeds.

The individual sections within the L-shaped rear taillights give the vehicle a lower, sportier look. Horizontal lights integrated in the rear light clusters offer a homogeneous lighting effect with the help of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). This light design, as found on other BMW models, makes the BMW 1 Series Coupe stand out at night. Also, the Adaptive Brakelights operating in two stages in relation to brake application force are yet another feature typical of BMW, with the additional benefit of extra safety on the road...

Between Chris Bangle's flame surfacing and EU regulations that raise the front profile of vehicles for pedestrian safety, I just can't get used to the look of this car. I think the flame surfacing is the worse of the two offenders.

The 135i does seem tempting though.

That is a fine looking car. The specs sound good and since I am old school the rear wheel drive is a plus. Now if the good folks at BMW can just find a way to lower the cost of repairs........................Unfortunately BMW's are one of the most expensive vehicles to repair. Parts and labor are sky high. They have a good warranty so if you trade them in before the warranty runs out you could avoid those expensive repairs.

obnoxiously ugly, but if I had the money today I'd still be in line for a 135. Just too much bang for the buck. I'm not normally a body kit kind of guy, but I'm really hoping somebody comes out with something that at least distracts you from the fact that the car looks like a transvestite burn victim.

I'm not mad about the looks one way or the other, but I'm digging the mechanicals of the 135i, especially the 3L twin turbo inline 6.

well damn, I just came back to the thread to read the comments only to find I never commented in the OP.

I'm not a fan of the Bangle man, but I must say that if you start to look at the other company designs such as the Acura, Toyota, you can see some of the similar influences from the original Bangle 7 series.

This "little" car seems to be a rocket based on the mechanicals and weight. I do want to see it and drive it. I had so much fun in the BMW Mini Cooper when I rented one in Spain. The new design of the Mini I'm not so happy with as I don't like the new bonnet due to the EU regulations for the front profile.

I'm having a hard time seeing the correlation of the transvestite burn victim as I can't see the car having any transvestite in it.

I wish they'd come out with this in the last generation (this generation looks absolutely horrible). 5.3 0-60 is very respectable.

I just saw the convertible announcement.... interesting, they are counting on this to be a winner making the announcement of a convertible so close to the initial release. Then again, the 1 series is a good seller in the Euro marketplace already.

I just made an appointment to go play with this car next in 2 weeks. I got an email inviting me to a preview of it.

It won't be any fun if I can't drive it.

Beautiful car. I used to think BMWs were overrated yuppie status symbols (probably are), but I got a chance to drive an 06 3 series and it was very fun to drive. Responsive like a go-cart...no slack in the steering, no body roll. 300 horsepower in the 1-series sounds like a nice ride. Don't crash it!

After pricing one out, IMHO, it's over priced for what it is.
I'll happily stick with my Audi A3 DSG.

But if they would bring the hatchback version to the states, i might reconsider.

I want to know where that first video takes place, rent a Porsche for a day and just go there and drive.

I like this new car, I've always liked BMWs. They're my "one day..." cars.

I drive a 118i 3 dr hatch. I love it. It could absolutely do with more power, but the 143 ponies are a)sufficient in the city b)suffcient that I can wail on it when I sometimes get into the countryside c)perfectly capable of getting my license revoked if the cops catch me... But seriously, folks, it's a great little car, and a great way to get into a RWD car in one of the most prohibitively expensive car-nations on the planet (Denmark). I will be taking the 135 i for a spin when I take mine in for a check-up in a few weeks!

I saw one of the new ones at the International Auto Show in New York this past Sunday. It looked sharper in person than it did in the pictures, and was smaller than I thought it would be.

I saw it on Tuesday. I blew off my BMW salesperson meetup so that I could go to the auto show instead. Not a hard choice, see 2 (135 and X6) cars versus see 1,000 cars.

Some one in front of us kept complaining there were no cup holders, he didn't bother to look under the armrest cantelever.

It looks like a fun drive, small and tight.
