I remember those. As far as I know that's from the 70's or so. Nobody uses them officially anymore. I could be mistaken.

MexicanOnABike 07-12-2007 08:39 AM

that is sweet!

Willravel 07-12-2007 09:33 AM

They don't appear to be especially effective. I'd guess that treaded automobiles could do just as well, with less torque required as those screw-drives must be extremely heavy.

Seems to work alright... though it seems that no one has told them of the "leave no trace behind" theory of enjoying the wilderness.

I forwarded this around the office and someone sent back the comment:

"Take only pictures, leave only a path of destruction"

Yeah, it really does seem like something a Bond villain should be at the wheel of.
villain: "I'm going to rid myself of you once and for all, Bond!"
[villain is unceremoniously squished by his own contraption]
Bond: "Looks like he screwed himself after all"
[goes off to tag delicious Russian double agent]

That's funny. Sure does sound like a classic Bond quip, too.

snake eater inspiration maybe

Looks like that SUV was created about 50 years ago - guess it never took on.

Ratman 07-17-2007 05:22 PM

It may have been an experimental military vehicle. It never showed up on any TOE that I ever saw for the Russians.

I bet that thing floats and works well on water and in swampy land. bet thats the whole idea of it. something that can go where a tracked thing would get stuck. and if thats russian... well anyone that knows much about that whole section of the world knows... who gives a damn what you do to the land thats all they have. wreck it blow it up and burn it they have plenty to spare. More bears then people and the bears are pissed off and cold most of the year. When its not cold its muddy.
