My first choice the day I bought that car was a '63 Chevy II with a 283 V8 and added-on 4-speed. That thing hauled balls but my parents vetoed and I wound up with the Mustang.

Had a black '66 Mustang with the 289 HiPo. Rebuilt the 289, put it behind a nice C4 automatic, and it would hit high 12's with Et Streets and a little shot of juice. I wrecked it about a year later after someone pulled out in front of me (stock brakes suck ass!). Sold it because I didn't really feel like spending all that money repairing it.

1969 Buick Skylark, Dark Green, Tan Interior. It had a 350 V8 in it. I used to blow the doors off the other cars. There were very few that actually bested me. I made it from Hazlet, NJ to Bradford, PA (385.56) in 4.5 hours, including a fuel/potty stop.

God I loved that car :)

Not mine, but very similar:

'73 plymouth Duster, slant-6 engine, faded sky blue. Drove it around for 5 years (mind you, that's from 2002 to 2007).

Finally bought an '04 Dodge Dakota at the beginning of this year. Friends joked that I wouldn't know how to drive anything less than 30 years old (was strange at first).

Halx 06-07-2007 04:59 PM

My first car was originally gonna be a 91 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, given to me by my grandpa, who was too old to drive. However, my dad did the most (materially) generous thing that he had ever done for me (up to that point) and gave me his 94 Honda Accord so that he could have the land barge. He told me it was because of the safety features and because its actually possible to lock yourself inside the Olds, but let's see a good deed for what it is: I wasn't going to have nearly as much fun in the Olds as I did in the Accord.

I took such good care of the Accord, it impressed my Dad to the point where he let me use it as a trade-in when I finally bought my own car... a 2002 Honda Accord Coupe.

The first car that I owned was a used mid-80s Chevy Cavalier. Mine was light blue.

I much preferred to drive my Mom's car, a 280ZX.

Martian 06-10-2007 03:36 AM

Charlatan, I now see that your coolness is genetic. Your mum drove a 280zx, she had to be the coolest mother ever. My mum drove a frickin Tempo.

My first car was a 1992 Chevrolet Beretta GT. White, auto, with a shag seat cover on the driver's side to cover the damaged upholstery.

http://www.beretta.net/model_info/images/92aGT.jpg

(not mine, but identical appearance.)

Man, I miss that car sometimes. It doesn't matter that what I drive now is much more... respectable. There's just nothing like your first.

Carno 06-10-2007 09:11 PM

I had a 1982 Chevy Caprice Classic that was a hand me down from my older brother. He had put a cherry bomb glasspack muffler on the thing so it was loud as fuck. One of the funnier quirks about the car was that when the windshiled wipers were turned on, they wouldn't turn off unless the car were turned off. So in order to turn them off whilst driving, I would have to put the car in neutral, turn off the ignition, re-start the car and then shift back into drive.

http://www.caixadefantasia.com/pnet/...rros0252_1.jpg

My brother had also wired the reverse lights to come on whenever the brakes were pushed. I'm sure many a person was freaked out upon rolling up behind me at a stop light and seeing my reverse lights on. Sadly the cops were less than amused.

They never find it as funny as you do.

91 Volvo 740....a hand-me-down from a family friend with about 163k miles on it, still have it (I'm nearly 23 now, got the car in late '05). Nothing fancy, but quite reliable...save some admittedly pricey maintenance, never had to do any serious work on it. Worst thing about the car is that the A/C doesn't work, and for an old family sedan, it's faster than you'd think.

Got this photo from the internets, but it's pretty much exactly what my car looks like.

joshbaumgartner 06-12-2007 11:59 AM

A well used (180k miles) 1978 Saab 99 in potato brown (antelope tan according to the specs). I took it to well over 300k in four years while in the navy driving all over the west and it was a real tank. Finally I screwed up an went off a freeway overpass, landing at 45 deg on the roadway and bent up the front end, a final beating it never fully recovered from :( The last pic is what I'm sure it's doing now that its gone on to a better place...

Never did it in the back. Rally'ed it, raced it, drove it across Europe, and generally did everything ill-advised to do in one's first car.

Oh, and mine was metallic dark red - chilli metallic in teutonic terms, and the "The Giant Zucchini" among friends...

Too bad it had soft cylinder heads. Good thing I sold it before it ess-ploded on me.

Fotzlid 12-14-2007 08:30 PM

thats your first car?

Plan9 12-14-2007 08:41 PM

Wait... how old am I? :D Oh, okay.

First one I bought, anyway. Dropped $XXk on it as a down payment, paid the rest in a year with my Iraqi deployment bloodmoney. No fuckin' around.

I don't consider the hand-me-downs from dead relatives, although they're definitely a pity story.

I drove a beige mid-'80s Merc Grand Marquis with whitewalls for a number of years. No pictures and bad memories.

Fotzlid 12-14-2007 08:55 PM

No pictures and bad memories.

had a couple of cars like that too...

1996 Chevrolet Malibu. It had a few small, annoying problems, but overall was a sturdy, reliable car.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...oletMalibu.jpg
Random note for those of you who have seen the new Malibu ads: I'm sure it's very comfortable and stuff like that, but the _hybrid_ version has similar gas mileage to my '96. I wish American car makers weren't so massively dumb.

The '02 Mazda Protege is my first and only car. I got it in 2005 with only 26,000 miles on the odometer!

This was my first, and still my only car, a grey Ford Contour. I am looking into getting a new car, though, since it has problems overheating and it likes to die at stoplights. Probably i'll get an old Civic.

I had a 1994 Ford Mondeo. Not a very exciting car, but ran well and had lots of space... until the head gasket blew on a motorway, costing me a ton in towing fees.

My first was a 67 Camaro, bought the car as a drivable 350 that was almost all stock. Ended up getting a full 454 from a family friend that I rebuilt myself and got a supercharger for this beast, I ended up lowering the car 2 inchs putting 17 inch rims all around had the chrome re chromed. This car was my baby but when time came to move I sold it off to a muscle nut down in Cali, kicking myself for selling it to this day but I love my Malibu.

I can't find my old pics of the Camaro which sucks but here is my Malibu.

1991 Honda Accord Sedan in Dark Blue.

I think the cars in this design series represent the current peak-to-date of the Accord aesthetic. I had it for a few years with no problems to speak of... one of my brothers borrowed it, parked it downtown and got it broken into. This screwed up the shifter (they apparently planted feet on the dashboard and just forced it back to more easily steal the radio). The car continued to function fine until it was borrowed a second time (again without asking) and driven around in between drive and neutral all day. "I think there's something wrong with your transmission." Oh, really?

You are right, Booby.... GREAT party car!

I don't have a pic handy, but a Subaru 1991.

I'm 26 and have upgraded to a 2000 Saturn LS. How's that for climbing the ladder? Look out for #1...

On the other hand my younger bro is onl 17, and his first car is a 2004 BMW 325i. You can see the slight difference in how our parents favor us.

My first car was a very used 1964 Rambler American 220 wagon with a flat head 6-cylinder engine, manual transmission (3-on-a-tree), 4 door. It was red with a white top, red vinyl interior, and an AM radio. I later moved the shifter to the floor just in time for the junior prom.
