Volkswagen GOLF?
Again, Looking at cars.
How many have you have driven a Volkswagen GOLF? I think the VR6 5 speed looks pretty sweet , ive read a few reviews but I thought Id ask what you guys think. http://www.recycler.com/img/spot/898639.jpg |
I've never driven one, read a review, or seen one, but my best friend has a Jetta.
VW makes some great cars, and I'm sure the Golf is a good pick. |
Golf is one of the best cars made.
I would go for the 1.8t myself, it's a bit sportier IMHO. Go drive one, you'll never look back... |
The car have posted above is actually a GTI, the 2 door version of the Golf.
The VR6 is break neck fast, more so than the 1.8T. The turbo'd 1.8 needs to be kept in the somewhat high revs to make its power, whereas the VR6 pulls like fuckin' crazy wherever you are at in the powerband. Trust me, I used to sell VW. |
I drive a GTTDi 150bhp every day and believe me, its one hell of a hatchback rocket... it surprises people everyday when they realise its a diesel.
Shame it sounds like a lorry, but thats nothing a good exhaust and induction kit can't fix. |

I have to say that the Golf is a pretty well made car. My friend has a 2000 Golf and when we were installing speakers into his car, we found that it was really well put together. Everything is screwed on tight and the workmanship is good for a car that costs under 20k.
Now the only thing lacking is that 2.0 (2.2?) liter engine in the regular golf. I'd go with either the 1.8 or VR6. And also about the 1.8, you could always put a chip in, put in a better exhaust and get like 40 more horsepower. |
Golf's are sweet, and even with the 1.8 they still can zip around quite nicely.
All around excellent vehicle |
Don't know about the Golf, but I just got a Mazda P-5. I think its comparable, Its handles great and looks great. You might want to take a look.

get the 2.0L vw and put a turbo charger in, it will cost you about $2000 more, but it will add some serious hp and will burn beemers!
|
My friend has a golf and if you are looking for 4 doors forget it, the back seats are an absolute joke...my 95 camaro has more leg room than that car...the 1.8t is eh okay....its really not worth the hike in insurance and gas costs/mileage....i mean it is pretty quick but it sucks 91 pretty quick...personally i think there are much better car for the prices

Not even by dropping a supercharger on a v6 will you achieve the power to do that. The 2.0l is 115 HP STOCK |
Protege5's are fun to drive, and very practical for someone in their 20's. But they are powered by a 130 hp 2.0L 4 banger and have no low end power at all. A 2.0L GTI would run circles around one.
And to debaser: sure the VR6 is heavier on the front end, and the 1.8T will outperform it in the corners, but as soon as the VR6 gets out of the corner and puts his foot down, the 1.8T will be eating tailpipe in no time. The VR6 has a metric shitload of low end power. |

I have driven the VW GTi VR6 and it is super good car. Handles damn well, with minimal body roll. It has good potential for being super fast, the only problem is it is FWD, so it has trouble putting the power down. My friend modded his quite a bit, and it one of my favorite cars to drive. No problems with matience or anything like that either.

the civic type R will be out in the states soon in some form or another ( possibly named civic SI type R or other...) and will blow both the current SI and GTI/Golf away. Test drive the SI and see how you like it, i absolutely love the car. I don't think i would trade one for the newer type r because of the insurance and i think the car is fast enough, but if you still want to go faster, you may think about waiting a bit for it to come out.
|
I find that a bit hard to believe. Do you have tentative specs on the new Type-R?
|
the Type-R will blow most low-range Golf's away, but high-end Golf's like the R32 and the V6 4motion will eat the Civic Type-R
|
amen to that bollocks,
Ah jeeves, yet again the germans have foiled the japanese plot to take over the world! YAY |
i like them,

I would definately go for the VR6. I own a jetta VR6 and my friend has a 1.8T. He has had more problems with his coilpacks (VW is notorius for these) than anything. Only thing I have had to do to my VR6 in the last 40k miles or so is regular maintenance and change one MAF (Mass Air Flow).
As far as speed.......We raced from a dead stop and his 1.8 has a slight edge from the line, but my VR6 has more overall top end speed. I've driven his 1.8T and would have to say that I would rather have the VR6. I know this is a jetta, but the Golf isn't that much different! Just make sure you have the $$$ if anything breaks cus everything on those cars are expensive as hell! |
I'd prefer a Jetta, more of a sleeper/Q car type thing.
|
hell yeah it is, everyone thinks 115 hp on a 2.0 can't cut it... :O
Just wait til i show you! Naw...like i said..GLI this October baby! |
