Dream Drive - Starting Tomorrow

It's a dream drive for me anyway. This past weekend I drove my NSX 1000 miles from Sarasota to Baltimore to attend a 2 day business meeting. Why would I drive instead of fly? Well, I don't have to be home until the weekend so I can spend the rest of the week driving the whole length of the Blue Ridge Parkway beginning tomorrow morning with Skyline Drive. When I reach the end of the Blue Ridge, I'll be within spitting distance of Deal's Gap and The Dragon with more great TN roads at hand.

I did part of this last year but I only had one day to enjoy the curvy scenery. This time, I have no such constraint. Plus it looks like the weather might be better than last year which was a bit drizzly and overcast.

Anyway, I'm geeked. I'm less than 2 hours from Front Royal (where Skyline Drive begins). My plan is to be there by 9am tomorrow, find a car wash and get my car all nice and clean (because everyone knows a car runs better when it's clean), and hit the hills. It's not a drive fast thing, but a drive beautiful thing. I can't wait!

Pictures sure to follow.

Good luck at the Dragon. I just read an article about it in either Motor Trend or Car and Driver. Sounds like fun, especially in an NSX.

There's s group of MINIs that do the Dragon every year. I hope that when I get the opportunity to do own a worthy vehicle that I get to drive it.

Pictures from today.

I also did take pictures that don't have my car in them. If you want to see the rest, they can be found here:

It's been an incredibly beautiful drive so far. I'll post more tomorrow night providing I have another hotel room with internet!

Great pics. I've always wanted to take a "driving" road trip. That is a road trip with the purpose of driving, not just getting some place. My wife doesn't know it yet, but one day we are going to drive to Yellowstone and avoid interstates the entire trip.

Some gorgeous pics, thanks. Looks like you encountered a Mini Cooper fun run.

Your trip reminded me of my own favorite that I took a few years ago and I dug out and looked at all my photos (pre-digital days) ...so you triggered all my fond memories of that too, thanks

As a semi-unrelated question.. You mentioned taking the car to a car wash. Do more exotic cars get taken to a special car wash, or just a regular one that one's daily commuter would be taken to?

Seems like a really fun trip, and the photos look great.

Thanks, it was a fun trip. I searched out an old fashioned hand car wash where you put your quarters in and grab the hi pressure wand but that was the first time in several years where I'd washed my car anywhere but my own driveway. For this trip I had packed a little bucket and a sponge and some drying towels. Worked out pretty well.

Most of the time though, do it myself at home. The guys with true "garage queens" don't have to wash often because they won't drive their cars in the rain or bad conditions. They probably pay a detailer a couple times a year to clean the car up that that's it. Me? I drive my car every day. Wouldn't have it any other way.

Once in a blue moon when I need a quick wash and just don't have the time, I'll take mine through a local wash where nothing but water and air touch the car ...they spray water to rinse, then soap, wash and rinse, then wax if you want that option, then rinse again with D.I. water or wetting agent, not sure but it beads the water right off, then air blow it all dry.

That is one beautiful car. Enjoyed the pics. That last photo with the house reflected in the lake is probably my favorite. Sounds like a fine road trip.

Good job keeping it in your lane. There are a lot of idiots on the Dragon (check killboy.com for proof!).
