(From GDT Press Release) The GDT Speedster is an exciting, one-of-a-kind, high performance sports car designed and fabricated by a team of automotive professionals. It has been hand crafted and is intended for sale to a discriminating collector who appreciates beautiful automotive styling, excellent engineering and fine craftsmanship.
RATIONALE

The GDT Speedster was designed and built by a team of experienced automotive engineers, stylists and a body-surfacing expert who love cars and who wanted to do a complete vehicle from scratch without the bureaucratic encumbrances of a large corporation. The project was initiated as an exercise in engineering and styling with “no holds barred”. It was also considered to be an engineering challenge because many projects like this one are started and very few are completed. In addition, the project was intended to be completed at a “reasonable” cost when compared to OEM produced one off show cars.

The team selected the vehicle’s name, GDT Speedster. It stands for Gene Dickirson Team Speedster. A speedster is the type of vehicle that typically has no top, no side windows and a raked back windshield intended for fun driving in good weather.

THE VEHICLE

Exterior

The GDT Speedster features a beautiful body designed by stylists Craig Sandvig and Larry Ronzi. The theme is fresh and it is intended to retain its freshness for many years to come. The eye catching windshield angle is only 19 degrees from the horizontal and utilizes a header less steel support structure. The sculptured side panels are dramatic in the way their surfaces “converge” just behind the upper edges of the doors.
The highlight of the rear view of the vehicle is the fully visible, polished stainless steel/ aluminum exhaust system. Just behind the gleaming tail pipes is the aluminum intensive rear suspension with axel half shafts which are fascinating to watch when the vehicle is in motion. The front of the speedster has a polished aluminum grill “floating” within a handsome opening. The hood is hinged at the front and when opened provides full access to the engine compartment. Similarly, the rear deck is hinged at the rear and when opened provides access to a small storage compartment behind the seats. The rear deck contains a polished aluminum fuel filler door with the team logo laser etched into the surface.
The body is painted Torch Red.

Interior

The interior is trimmed in Light Oak leather. The instrument panel is custom styled and fabricated. It is attractive to look at and easy to use. The top of the instrument panel is trimmed in leather. The instrument cluster features custom built gauges with the team logo printed on the faces of the speedometer and the tachometer. A unique PRNDL gauge is used to indicate the transmission gear selected. The PRNDL gauge is located in the central portion of the instrument panel next to the clock. Only four switches are needed on the instrument panel to operate the electrical system. To the left of the steering column is a black rocker switch for ignition ON-OFF with a green LED to indicate ON. To the left of the ignition switch is a red rocker for START. To the right of the column is a black rocker switch for lighting. Next to the light switch is a black rocker for HEATER-OFF-A/C. The three-way heater A/C switch has red and blue LED’s to indicate the mode selected. A foot operated headlamp dimmer switch is used. The brake and accelerator pedals are trimmed with polished stainless steel bezels.
The custom designed gear selector knob has leather covering the tapered portion of the polished aluminum body. The leather covered central console sweeps into the rear deck and the team logo is embroidered into the upper face. The seats are custom built for the GDT Speedster by Cerullo Performance Seating. The steering wheel is custom built by Lecarra and the polished aluminum horn button has the team logo laser etched into the surface.

Frame & Underbody

The GDT Speedster frame is very strong. It is fabricated from rectangular steel tubing with a wall thickness of 3.1 mm (.12 inches). The main side rails are 51 mm wide and 152 mm high (2 inches x 6 inches). The under body and dash panel are fabricated from steel sheet fully welded to the frame rails. All welding was done by aerospace/military certified welders.

Drive Train

The engine, transmission, differential, front and rear suspension, steering and brakes are from a Chevrolet Corvette.

Wheels & Tires

Fikse built the beautiful; three piece forged and polished aluminum wheels especially for the GDT Speedster. The front wheels are 18 inches in diameter and 10.5 inches wide and the rear wheels are 18 inches x 12 inches. The Michelin Pilot Sport tires are size 285/35x18 on the front and 335/30x18 on the rear.

PRICE

The GDT Speedster will be auctioned during the second or third quarter of 2006. The minimum bid will be US $350,000
now to me it looks like it was designed by the boys at Hotwheels... for $350,000 minimum it should at LEAST be fast OR good looking, preferably both... and to me it's neither (for the price anyway, it would certain beat my car)

one-of or not... really now.

Cynthetiq 04-09-2006 09:56 AM

hmmph.

with today's technology you can get a great one off with less than $100,000 and it would be fast and good looking.

BigTruck1956 04-09-2006 11:37 AM

Come ON. Who wants drop 350K on a corvette with a body kit??

Willravel 04-09-2006 11:47 AM

Ugly as sin. I wouldn't drive it for free.

ubertuber 04-09-2006 02:36 PM

Well, that's pretty expensive. But I like the gauges.

catback 04-10-2006 04:55 AM

$350,000 for that? For that money I'd buy a corvette AND a house to park it at.

cyrnel 04-10-2006 05:01 AM

I'm sure they're just trying to recoup funds & get stoopid money if they can. It'll be the car's first auction minimum. With the looks of that thing there won't be more than a bidder or two whatever the price. May as well dream.

I like the gauges too, though the combination with the interior just looks like a kitcar. VDO has a series like that. Classic or something?

aceventura3 04-10-2006 08:23 AM

If I had Bill Gates kind of money the $350k price tag would mean nothing. You might be able to get mass production cars that can perform better, but if you are going to truely have a "one of a kind" sports car, $350 doesn't seem that much.

THGL 04-10-2006 09:38 AM

For $350k I'd at least want the exhaust tips to look they weren't made by the local HS shop class.

For less than 1/3 the cost of that, you could buy a Pontiac Solstice and have a Vette engine dropped it.

Martian 04-10-2006 09:39 AM

Would I buy it? Hell no. Then again, no matter how wealthy I become I'm not likely to spend over $100 000 on a car - supercars just don't interest me.

Is it going to sell? Yes, it will and probably for a good deal more than the initial bid. There are plenty of people out there with far more money than sense and you have to consider that the sort of people who could afford this thing would probably be interested in the prestige associated with owning a truly one-of-a-kind vehicle. There is only one GDT Speedster in the world and that's going to count for a lot.

Aro23 04-10-2006 09:53 AM

that car looks like it's still in the prototype stages if that's the final result it's an ugly car for 350k. as mentioned above there are so many other vehicles that you can purchase for less the price. or with that price buy a lot of cars hehehe

waltert 04-10-2006 02:35 PM

the powertrain definetely seems...lame... for a car of that price... they should have gotten hold of an LS7

DJ Happy 04-11-2006 01:39 AM

If someone gave that to me for free, I'd sell it. Luckily for the manufacturers there are plenty of complete morons with wadloads of cash in the world.

The front looks like something out of a children's book - smiling face grill and two happy eye lights. Crap.

BadNick 04-11-2006 05:23 AM

I see a few successful design details here and there, but IMO, overall the design is a failure because it looks like they totally gave up thinking about the front. So it ends up looking like an ill conceived and poorly executed kit car worth way WAY under the asking price. People who have no design sensibility should not be designing stuff.

ncgti 04-11-2006 10:43 AM

Who beat that with an ugly stick?? So close but the front end - yuck!! Hot Wheels must have had the final design contract.

superiorrain 04-11-2006 10:47 AM

I'm not paying for it and i certainly wouldn't want to be seen driving it. Give me a Ferrari 430 at half the price and i'll show you a real car.

fastom 04-11-2006 11:00 PM

It sure is ugly and has just 300hp with an automatic and lame gearing. It's an 80's Corvette with a body kit.

Funny thing is they are all Ford employees, you'd think they would have taken some cast off GT parts home in their lunch boxes to build this thing.

shakran 04-12-2006 05:36 AM

so I can get a rolling pile of crap for $350,000 OR for $190,500 I can get this:

http://www.moslerauto.com/images/mt9.../photo_006.jpg

and go 0-60 in 3.1 seconds, with a second gear start.

Gee, tough choice ;)

newtx 04-12-2006 05:45 AM

I don't think it will bring that kind of money. In my opinion the front end needs to be scrapped. I like what they have done with the interior. Looks like they were after the James Bond look.

And a C-5 Corvette at that from the sounds of it

MSD 04-20-2006 01:44 PM

Wow, it's so ugly it crashed Firefox.

I'll take my non-existant 350k and spend it on a non-existant house.

blade02 04-25-2006 11:23 AM

A few comments... the back and sides of the car look nice... simple, clean, slick lines... but they let a 5 year old design the front end. And why the LT1? Why not an LS series block? Its not like they're hard to find or anything. Hell I know of S-10s with LS swaps. How could these guys who are supposedly big time designers, not get a hold of one?

Rippley 04-26-2006 01:32 PM

If I were king of the world, and had all the money ever printed, I'd buy one for my collection, and take it out on a sunday once in a while. Wouldn't buy it otherwise, though...

'90silvia 04-26-2006 08:04 PM

not for me. waste of time in my humble opinion. I would rather have a tuned 911 Porsche and a downpayment on a beach house. just my .02 though. *a

micah67 04-28-2006 10:34 AM

I don't see a radio, nor speakers. For that kind of $$$, I'd expect at least an 8-track.

Scrub0 04-30-2006 06:03 PM

i don't like it. i would drop the cash on a new BMW M5 and a house, myself.
