long jagged fingers of some near dead wizard sway
in the whistling futility
of winter’s spring offensive
on a mid march saturday

yet amazed
determined children trudge on in the work of play
on the cold wet brownish green
of any suburban lawn

outward gaze
harbingers of what’s coming and going away
in the stagnant certainty
of backdoor mats and air vents

well I’ve been searching
for some light here in the dark
and I’ve been trying
to tell the truth and lies apart
and I’ve been looking
for some sanity in this crowd
and I’ve been listening
but the clamor is too loud
I’m trying to rescue
life from the jaws of death
and seeking purity
before my dying breath
and I’m still waiting
for the story to appear
and I’ve been wondering
when the picture will be clear
as they bend and test
twist and stretch
spin and distort
embellish and sort
and tell me how to feel
but I only want what’s real
they omit, fabricate
shred and incinerate
stall and delay
and get in the way
and make up an excuse
but I only want the truth
well I’ve been aching
for love that never leaves
and I’ve been asking
just whom can I believe
hoping for innocence
as accusations fly
I’ll never find it
but still I’ve got to try
as they bend and test
they twist and stretch
they spin, distort
embellish and sort
and offer a new deal
but I only want what’s real
they preach, exaggerate
they slander, retaliate
with tactical wordplay
they pass the blame away
or try to force their views
but I only want the truth
