Hi,

I just started taking an "Intro to fiction Writing" class. I've only ever written one other thing in my life so I pretty much suck right now, though hopefully I'll improve.

This was our first assignment. We had to write a short story (1-3 pages double spaced) using ONLY dialogue. I bolded on of the characters so it is easier to follow.

Goodbye

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”
“Why yes, yes it is.”
“I wish I was a poet so that I could capture its beauty in words.”
“Perhaps its beauty is in seeing it, not reading about it.”
“I suppose you’re right. I just wish that I could share it with the world.”
“Don’t all who come to find such things?”
“No, not all. At least, I don’t think so.”
“How do you figure?”
“Well, there are those selfish types, you know?”
“No, I’m not sure that I do.”
“Well, it seems to me there are people who wish to be selfish. To hide what should never be hidden, so that they might enjoy it just for themselves.”
“Ah, but then you are talking about normal, everyday things. Surely, with this, people wouldn’t fall to their baser instincts?”
“I certainly would hope not. But one can never underestimate capacity for humans to be greedy.”
“It’s a shame really.”
“Yes, it really is.”
“But I still have hope for us.”
“By ‘us’ you mean people? The human race?”
“That’s right.”
“What gives you hope then?”
“Well, this does for one. It’s so beautiful.”
“How does this being beautiful give you hope?”
“Well, hope is beautiful, is it not?”
“I suppose it depends on your definition of both words.”
“I suppose it would, but I think you know but just want to be difficult.”
“Why would I want to do that?”
“I don’t know, you tell me.”
“That isn’t a fair question.”
“Why not?”
“Because you are the one supposing I am doing something, but you haven’t substantiated that I am actually doing it.”
“Now you’re really being difficult.”
“This conversation doesn’t seem to be headed anywhere.”
“No, it doesn’t. In fact, I think I’m going to kill you now.”
“What did you just say?”
“I think it is time for you to die.”
“Is this some sort of joke?”
“No.”
“And why have you come to this decision?”
“I’ve been thinking.”
“Have you?”
“Yes, I really have.”
“Oh, well I suppose that explains it.”
“Yes, well, what did you expect?”
“Not much really. But I still had hope.”
“You know, I wasn’t serious about hope back there.”
“Well serious or not you convinced me.”
“That just goes to show you.”
“So what will you do with it?”
“I don’t know. But it’s mine now”
“How did things come to this?”
“I’m not entirely sure. But we can’t turn back now.”
“No, I suppose not. May I have one last look?”
“I guess it couldn’t hurt.”
“It’s so beautiful.”
“Yes, yes it is.”
“I suppose this is goodbye, isn’t it?”
“Yes it is.”
“Well, goodbye then.”
“Goodbye.”
