Poetry

Shells exploding above my head.
The Sargent is yelling.

Am I going to die?

Grenade! Someone yells.
Dirt in my eyes.

Am I going to die?

My body hugs the ground.
Glazed eyes stare at me.

Am I going to die?

Gun trembles in my hand.
Eyes sting with sweat.

Am I going to die?

Smoke so thick.
Are there snipers?

Am I going to die?

Sarge yells again.
Time to move out.

I am going to die.

Slowly walk, as we talk
Down the hall, in the fall
Look at you, are we through?
Look at me, easily.

Ask you twice, then ask thrice
As you blink, make me think
Silent again, you my friend?
Look at me, easily.

Alas you speak, secret you keep
I hear sound, none around
Pain in me, can't you see?
Look at me, easily.

Walk away, they all say
Hurt is real, time to heal
Ask myself, no one else?
Look at me, easily.
