Exercise - it can save your mind- How much do you do?

Interesting, but perhaps not surprising research that a sharp mind and exercise go hand in hand:
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/10877612/#storyContinued

So the question of the day is how much exercise do you do?

For me I walk about 2-3 hours a day.

ryfo 01-16-2006 03:52 PM

gym 6 days a week for around 1-1 1/2 hrs and i try to walk where I can

Biscuit Buns 01-16-2006 05:26 PM

An embarrassingly low amount. However, I've just quit my desk job and found a workout buddy, so I have no excuse not to get my ass in gear. I always feel so much better when I'm moving a lot.

Rudel73 01-16-2006 06:00 PM

uh...all the workouts we have to do for football...i have no idea but way too much in my opinion...stupid college

shesus 01-16-2006 06:38 PM

I don't go to the gym. Even though it's downstairs and free. I used to go and do weight training, but haven't been in awhile. My exercise is walking. Since we live in downtown Chicago we walk everywhere (grocery store, parks, shopping, etc). I'm also a first grade teacher so I'm constantly on my feet and doing activities with the students.

During the weekends we will easily walk 20 miles. I've never been able to stick to an exercise routine. I just hope that my daily routines and active life style will fulfill the workout needs.

I do notice a remarkable difference in my life though. I always lived in areas that weren't conducive to walking. In fact, where I grew up if I would walk to the store that was about 2 blocks away people would look at me like I was crazy. Since I've moved here and became more active, my disposition and health has definitely taken a turn for the better.

Study: Staying active helps keep the mind sharp
PHILADELPHIA - Older people who exercise three or more times a week are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia, according to a study that adds to the evidence that staying active can help keep the mind sharp.

Researchers found that healthy people who reported exercising regularly had a 30 to 40 percent lower risk of dementia.

The study, published Tuesday in the Annals of Internal Medicine, reached no conclusions about whether certain types of exercise helped more than others, but researchers said even light activity, such as walking, seemed to help.

“It seems like we are delaying onset,” said Dr. Wayne McCormick, a University of Washington geriatrician who was one of the study’s authors. “The surprising finding for us was that it actually didn’t take much to have this effect.”

Some researchers have theorized that exercise might reduce brain levels of amyloid, a sticky protein that clogs the brain in Alzheimer’s patients.

The study, from 1994 to 2003, followed 1,740 people ages 65 and older who showed no signs of dementia at the outset. The participants’ health was evaluated every two years for six years.

Out of the original pool, 1,185 people were later found to be free of dementia, 77 percent of whom reported exercising three or more times a week; 158 people showed signs of dementia, only 67 percent of whom said they exercised that much. The rest either died or withdrew from the study.

The study could not say if exercise helped prevented dementia altogether, because not all of the participants were followed up to their deaths.

The frequency of dementia was 13 per 1,000 person years for those who said they exercised three or more times a week, compared with 19.7 per 1,000 person years for those who reported exercising less.
Other researchers said randomized studies — in which participants would be randomly assigned to either exercise or maintain their usual habits — are needed to confirm the findings.

Bill Thies, vice president for medical and scientific affairs for the Alzheimer’s Association, said a randomized trial with more people could help answer questions such as what types of exercise might help more than others.

“You would have to start with a group that had roughly common habits, and change those habits in one group and not in the other,” Thies said.

I walk/run at the gym 6-7 days a week for 45-60 minutes. I just started this past summer, but I really enjoy it. I just hop on the machine and usually listen to some tunes and unwind..

thingstodo 01-17-2006 02:53 PM

I get 3 hours minimum of cardio from spins classes each week. I also add another 30-45 minutes on an Arc Trainer each time I lift, which is usually 3 times/week. I feel the best when I keep this pace but I take a week of every three months.

Guinevere 01-17-2006 03:41 PM

I could do more but hate routine in all things. I do pilates/yoga once a week at home usually after a long walk around my neighborhood. I always feel better afterwards but it doesn't motivate me to do more. I prefer walking to most forms of exercise. I do not have a weight problem--never had; good genes I guess but I am prone to be meloncholy and walking is the best deterent I've found, ever.

soccerchamp76 01-17-2006 05:47 PM

I do cardio about 4 times a week and I lift about 3-4 times a week. Some days I lift then run, others I just run or just lift.

frogza 01-24-2006 10:39 AM

In the winter I get about 5 hours a week, in the summer that jumps to about 15-20 hours per week.

raeanna74 01-24-2006 05:09 PM

I was doing about 1hr each/3 times a week until January hit. Then we started remodeling and I've had absolutely no time. BUT I've been doing a LOT more lifting, carrying and heavier work during the day so my activity level has not dropped. I'm just not getting the aerobic workout that I should be getting.

darkangel 01-27-2006 02:42 AM

My job requires constant exercise. 8 hours a day, 5 days a week of constant walking, lifting, pushing, pulling etc. So when I get home I'd say I'm allowed to relax.

bing bing 01-27-2006 06:09 AM

I exercised a whole lot more before the shin splints kicked in. I should look into hitting the bike at the gym i guess.

Mister Coaster 01-27-2006 07:35 AM

I take a walk every day on my lunch half-hour. Usually a 2 mile or so loop, up and down hills in a residential area. On weekends there is this really great trail by my house, 3 big, steep hills then down the back side, then over and down again on a paved road. Takes a little over an hour, makes for a great workout.

I'll admit that I should do some weight training for my upper body, but for my weight-loss routine, the walking does the trick. I regularly post in the TFP weight watchers topic, since I started last May, I have lost 108 lbs.

SuicideBlonde 01-27-2006 08:45 AM

I Spin cycle 3-4x a week, if not doing that then I try to run or workout on the elliptical crosstrainer. I also weight train 1-2x a week for an hour. I took this past week off which is rare, I haven't had a break like that in 2 years. I guess I was feeling burned out and in need of a change. Hoping to get back at it Monday morning!

stevie667 01-27-2006 10:05 AM

3/4 1/2 hr works a week, 2x2 hrs Muay Thai, about 2-5 hours a week walking to and from college.

bout 10.5 hours on the lower side, 15 on the upper.

gremlinx8 01-27-2006 03:52 PM

I go running/biking everyday for around 1.5 hours. If I feel up to it I do some lifting and situps afterward.

Willravel 01-27-2006 03:56 PM

I haveen't done less than an hour a day in years. I will often spend half the day walking, running or doing yoga. I remember reading the initial reports on the connection between mental state and physical state years ago.

Carno 01-27-2006 04:03 PM

I work out every week day, and run about three days a week, for at least three miles.

I work out on an eliptical 5 times a week for 40 minutes... it's amazing at toning the butt/hips and abs... I also horseback ride a couple times a week and talk about a work out for your thighs :)

As far as feeling healthier...i feel better when i work out and i do feel *clearer mentally, because i think it's a destresser.

Exercise is usually the #1 source for relieving stress. There are numerous neurological and chemical reasons for this. Endorphins are released during exercise, which will make you fell better. Endorphins are your bodies natural drugs, where ther "runner's high" comes from.

heyhey 01-29-2006 05:30 AM

twice a week...using the slow exercise approach. 10 sec. posivive, 10 sec. negative. 1 set of each exercise until muscle failure.

abaya 01-30-2006 05:34 PM

Yep, not even therapy for two years helped much until I started exercising regularly. I think it has really helped my mental outlook... I still have my bad days, but exercising has always been positive for me. If only I could stick to a better schedule...

So on my good weeks, I walk about an hour each weekday (20 minutes uphill and stairs), and do cardio (ergometer) 3 x for 20 mins each. Then I lift 3 x for about an hour each time. So I guess if you add it all up, that's close to 10 hours (including making love, which I count as some exercise!). :)

Of course, the cardio and lifting bits haven't been consistent for two months now due to vacations and injuries. I treasure my daily walking commute, though, and am so glad that it is halfway uphill (most of the time). No matter how cold it gets, my pulse is always way up there during that part and I start overheating in my warm clothes!

Val_1 02-03-2006 03:55 PM

Go to the gym for 1 to 1.5 hours three times a week. About half weight training, half cardio. I started three years ago after my divorce, and it's helped me to relieve stress ever since.

nukeu666 02-08-2006 12:51 AM

currently i do a 2.2 jog in the morning and 3.2 job during the evening everyday

redsfan11 02-08-2006 02:54 AM

I currently exercise about 2 1/2 hours a year, but that usually drops off considerable after the New Year's Resolution wears off.

I guess that explains my lack of career advancement, but since I'm not exercising - I've been slow to figure that out.
