And the Telegraph story by Paul Stokes begins as thus:

Josie Caven, who was born deaf, will be able to hear Christmas carols for the first time after having cochlear implants in both ears.

Josie, 12, was previously able to distinguish only a few sounds through hearing aids which she has worn from the age of two.

She beamed with delight as she listened to Jingle Bells on the radio for the first time.

"It is so nice to hear music, especially Christmas carols," she said.

Man that's crazy... Never being able to hear and then suddenly having hearing.

Gotta be amazing to experience one of your senses for the very first time.

I'd like to think that if I did, I could say something a bit more inspiring than 'it was so nice'.

I hear ya flamingdog... though I'm wondering if she was just being really careful, minding her P's & Q's...

Being the sarcastic person I am, I would likely shout out something jubilent and then immediately stop and say "oh my god, is that what I sound like when I talk?" lol

This is great news though, I was reading something about this new procedure with the implants that works for some people with hearing loss. It only fixes some issues, but if it gives hearing to even 5 or 10% of those now deaf (or born deaf in the future), the reward is still incredible. I can't imagine being a child and for the first time, actually hearing your parents tell you they love you. I'd imagine it's quite powerful.

doesn't anyone find it strange that someone who was pretty much totally deaf can suddenly listen to a song and appreciate it? I'd think it would just sound like a confused racket and she would have no comprehension of it at all in that first time! I think it's weird she enjoyed it... does anyone know more about the subject of our natural understanding of sounds? is it innate or do we learn it? I think to some degree we learn it, because in different cultures, although music is always present, it is not always pleasing interculturally.
