Anyone had any experience with do-it-yourself gatorade powder/syrup?

Hey everybody, I recently began looking into low cost gatorade options and I have come across two categories that homemade gatorade comes in: powder and syrup (concentrate).

I was wondering if any of you have had any experience with these and if anyone has a preference for one over the other. Also, what would be considered good prices for each? I have come across some gatorade powder on ebay for $45 with shipping that contains 20 packets that each yield a gallon of gatorade per packet. That seems like I good deal but I'm not sure. Thanks for any imput.

Go with powder, stick it in a little pot, mix it with water when you need and your ready to go.
Sport drink powder is the nuts. :D

I second the powder option. But for me, when I made it, I made it in advance with BOILING water. I found that room temperature or cold water just didn't dissolve all the crystals.

Hmmm ok, use boiling water. thanks.

I began riding bikes in South Florida several years ago. I first started with Gatorade but got into the nutritional aspects of things with longer distances. From that I doscovered a powder called Cytomax. Lemon-Lime is a great flavor and doesn't gunk up in your throat. It mixes easily with any water temp.

I drink water during weight training but often hit the eliptical or a spin bike for 45-60 minutes after lifting and add this stuff to my water bottle at that point. It mixes immediately. It also has other beneficial ingredients for recovery from higher intensity wrokouts.

You can find Cytomax at REI and bike stores. I get mine from www.performacebike.com.

I was keeping the Gatorade powder on hand quite a lot during the summer cause I get dehydrated easily even when I'm drinking water. It worked fine and I even had figured out how much to add to just a bottle of water so that I didn't have to make a whole pitcher all the time.

I DID find though that if you leave it out when it gets really humid then it can sometimes lump up and get hard. Then it doesn't dissolve well at all. A dry, cool place is best.

Such is the case with pretty much any powder.

It mixes better with warm (or boiling) water because solubility increases with increased solvent (water in this case) temperature. It should, however, dissolve in room temperature or cold water, as gatorade powder is pretty soluble.

Maybe I got the discount stuff then. I needed boiling water to get the powder 100% dissolved. No name brand?

I know my local costco sells a powder form of gatorade. Might want to look there if your looking for a deal.
