Long bubble baths result in dry skin.. What now?

I work at a physical job that results in me sweating a lot in the summer, and ultimately getting pretty tired by the end of my shift.

Lately, I've been coming home to a bubble bath, where I soak and read for anywhere up to, and beyond, 30 minutes. Furthermore, the water is almost always warm.

On the weekends I get some sun, and during work I sweat a lot. The bubble bath likely has detergents that dry the skin, and the warm water combines with all these factors to dry out my skin to a point where it becomes uncomfortable, even irritaetd.

All of the things above are likely compounding to dry out my skin, to the point where it might even become "scaly" at times.

My question is, how can I address this?

Obviously, I will cut down on the bubble baths, and I already only drink water (no caffeine).. The last few days I overdid it with the bubble baths and my skin is rewarding me now by itching and being very dry, specifically on my back and stomach.

We have something called "Ocean Potion" which has Aloe Vera / Lidocaine and Tea Tree Extract, which I honestly have no idea if it is good to use or not. I did apply some though just now and will see how things go.

In spots there is a little rash as a result of the dryness and when I stretch a particular area, you can feel the "itch" stretching, if that makes sense.

If anyone has suggestions on how to address or tips on how to avoid this dry skin in the future, I'd appreciate it if you would share them.

I've found that taking a bath with a couple of squirts of baby oil instead of bubble bath liquid will keep my skin from drying out. Give it a try...

I'd suggest putting any form of mineral oil on *after* you've been soaking as its main purpose is to create a moisture barrier. Meaning, moisture can't go in and moisture can't go out, so it's good for sealing IN the moisture of your bath after you bathe.

Cut down on the bubble bath. Be sure to exfoliate (scrub with a good natural bristle body brush - they're relatively inexpensive and great for circulation, too). Apply lotion/cream/oil to help seal in moisture. Personally, I prefer veggie oils that can be found in the kitchen. Olive oil has excellent anti-oxidants (more in the extra virgin oils) and is very smoothing and moisturizing. Sunflower is superb for smoothing dryness away (and is high in linoleic acid).

Make sure you're drinking enough water, also.

Thanks for the replies!

In regards to using the "household oils" you both suggested.. You just add them like you would bubble bath?

About how much oil do you use with one bath?

Also, would it be alright do do this now, while the skin is dry, or is it better to wait until it resolves itself before trying the oil baths?

I assume it's OK to do now, but just wanted to make sure it won't make it worse..

some bath oil have moisturisers in them. or add it to your water, or apply moisturiser after u get out

You can add them to your bath water anytime or you can just apply the oil after. Veggie oils are a bit different than mineral oil, so you don't need to worry your skin not getting any moisture with them.

And just for the record, I'm not against mineral oil, but you need to know that it should go on your skin when you want to "seal in" the moisture, not before you try to put moisture in.

I use bath oils instead of bubble bath and I've never had a problem with the skin drying out. If you dont want "household" stuff go somewhere like Bath and Bodyworks, they have tons of stuff that even someone like me with sensitive skin can use every day with no problems
