Any ideas for a very upset stomch

I have beeng getting sick where my stomch just hurts and hurt and puke a lot even when there is nothing left in the stomch. Any idea on how to settle a upset stomch?

I say rest, drink plenty of water, and try not to stress. Your digestive system is hooked to your autonomic nervous system and can get triggered easily by both psychological and physiological stresses.

It depends on how long you've been getting sick like that. If it's a passing thing, try mint tea or saltine crackers. Rest, of course, although if you're that sick it's hard to do anything else. If you're getting that sick for any length of time, see a doctor. If nothing else there are suppository anti-nausea drugs they can give you. I know it sounds gross but extreme situations call for extreme measures and if you really can't keep anything down by mouth it might be advisable. I used to be a professional puker so I know about these things.

Texan, you really shouldn't have said that about the toilet brush holder...he's probably retching just from reading that!

Definitely see a doctor if it goes on for more than a few days. You don't want to mess around with that sort of thing.

I would say fart. If you're having trouble holding down food and get sick even when you havne't eaten it's probably more then an upset stomache.

If it's chronic -- keeps happening over a period of a week or more -- see a doctor.

As far as bland food that quiets the system, bananas are good. But I would also suggest saltines as others have, because if you're puking a lot you're losing salt.

Ginger Ale doesent always contain real ginger
I'd get a few pieces of crystalized ginger. It's really good and it helps my stomach whenever I have problems in that area.

Actually it is potassium.

Ginger is a natural occuring plant that blocks nausea receptors (similar to medicines such as zofran, compizine, and reglan); but with out the side effects.

Most upset stomacs are viral gastroenteritis. Caviates are if you have been traveling lately, camping trips, or driking foul water. Food poisoning is also on the list.

The best thing to do is always drink lots of water and sports drinks (for electrolyte replacement). High fevers or losing blood from above or below is always bad, seek medical help.

Drink a Coca-Cola. I'm not kidding. It really helps with nausea.

Another thing that helps is chicken noodle soup with a bit of milk in it. I have a very weak and sensitive stomach and these are my cures of choice

That's good to know. I wasn't aware of that before. So where can you get crystalized ginger? Spices section of the grocery store? Health food store? Alchemist?

You should be able to get ginger capsules at your local health food store (GNC, Vitamin Shoppe, etc). The dose I have read about is 1000mg and it is supposed to work for any cause of nausea.

I was always advised that it's best to eat no solids for 24 hours after vomiting.

Clear fluids - soda, water, consommé, that sort of thing - are all very good.

That all depends... you can advance your diet to what you can tolerate. No real need to wait a full 24 hours. Many people (especially the younger folk) will puke for no real reason (probably related to nerves) and feel just fine.

They actually make ginger suckers. I use them for my pregnant patients alot, and they work wonders. Not to mention very tasty!

If you cannot hold down anything gatoraid, is the drink you should have. The body will take in from there a lot of the sugar and other stuff it needs. So even if you puke it up, your body will get some nourishment.
