not really sure where to put this... "guys clubs ext.."
well i have been thinking about this for awhile now, and why is it ok for women / girls to have clubs ect... that guys are no way allowed in, but if a guys group starts every girl wants in/ complains untill they shut it down for being sexist?

It's because males are considered to be the socially dominant gender. It's the same reason white people can't have "whites only" clubs. When you think about it, it's a bit silly since the very concept of considering them to be the dominant gender or ethnicity (true or not) immediately bolsters that groups position of social power and prevents true equality.

It’s because when you’re a girl growing up, your brothers/boys always got the cool toys. They got to build their own clubhouse. They got to put up a rope swing over the bayou. They got to start campfires and stay out late. Girls got tea parties, playing house, secret clubs where you talked about boys (but didn’t do anything exciting), and other generally boring activities.
Of course we want into men’s clubs! Of course men don’t care to join ours!! We just know you are doing something exciting in there. And we want to mess it up, just like we used to trash our brother’s clubhouse.   |
At my old university, there was a black fraternity and a black sorority. They jointly sponsored a "Miss Black Western" pageant every year. And every year it makes me want to throw up, because no one would even dare starting an all-white fraternity/sorority and then running a "Miss White Western" pageant.

At least those damn women have stayed away from the Masons.
/Angry I can't be a Mason, I have to settle for Eastern Star, what a crock. |
I think that is a bit of a generalization on your part.
I don't think it is fair to group men and woman into categories and it will lead to a flame war and not an adult discussion. That being said I am watching to see where this goes, if anywhere. |

I simply assumed it was so we could yak about feminine products & the guys wouldn't be able to post & say...
"Gross! This thread sucks!" :) |
Take Augusta National for example. It's a men's club that has existed for a really long time. They have a nice golf course and it's very elite. Every year when the Masters rolls around there is so much publicity about how wrong it is that they don't allow women. You certainly don't see men forming groups complaining about how it isn't fair they aren't allowed in their exclusive club.
Or, if you want to look at a more accesible place, why is there a Ladies Lounge but no Mens Lounge at the TFP? |

We've been over the Ladies Lounge way too many times. Get over it already |
Alas, if your a white male between 18 and 65 you have absoloutly no right whatsoever, neither in this universe or any other, to form any kind of exclusive club that only caters to your particular denomination.
If your black, a woman, yellow, french, a rodent your more than welcome to. Just not if your white and male. It's a big case of reverse sexism and political correctness. It sucks. :| |

However, that is such a typical response. Maybe women should 'get over it already' on the mens clubs issues. |

I can agree with that.. the world would be a better place if all the PC bullshit was gone anyway. |
Personally I don't care for the clubs. I wouldn't want to be a member of something that is so snotty and such, but at the same time I don't want to criticize people for wanting to socialize with 'their own'

There's a lovely golf course near my home, it's one of the better courses around, challenging without making you wish for the skills of Tiger Woods. However, the clubhouse bars women from being allowed in the bar. Why is it that I am allowed to play golf there, which costs me money, but I am not allowed to enter the bar area. I don't play at a cheaper rate then the men do, it is solely my gender that keeps me out. I won't play at that course anymore.
The University Club in NYC at one point had a no women in the lounge area rule. As a female, I paid the same membership dues as the men did, but I wasn't allowed the same rights as the men were, and it wasn't l ike the men were running around nekkid. My membership was cancelled pretty quickly and i haven't looked at it since. There are very few places where men are not allowed to go (and I'm not talking women's dressing rooms, or restrooms) There are very few women only places. There are still a few single sex colleges, and are slowly becoming co-ed, for financial reasons, I think it was Mills College in California, that accepted a male because he took them to court... but otherwise there are very few men who would fight to do something that is a women's only domain. When Anika Sorenstan (or whatever her name was) tried to play on the Men's PGA tour, she did quite well, but didn't makethe cut, I heard a lot of guys saying well, you don't see men fussing to play on the LPGA tours -- how many men would hold their heads high and say that ooooh I went all the way to the supreme court to play with the girls... :) Doubt it would happen, why? Because the perception is to play with the boys is a step up... it's making the girls more competive.. .but for a boy to willingly play with the girls -- well there's something wrong with him.. that he's not trying very hard... |

That playing in the same league as a white male was considered an achievement. A white male wouldn't consider it an achievement to play on a women's league. |
