Losing weight

What is the best way?

I am slightly over weight (approx. 165 lbs on a 5'8" frame) - particularly in the abdoman area. I want to lose it, but I
feel embarassed when I go to the gym.

What are some good methods for dropping pounds. The rest of my body is fine. I just cant seem to get rid of the mid section fat.

speed up your metabolism maybe. eat smaller meals more frequently. if you arent working out, you shouldnt be snacking any more than 2 hours before you hit the bed. be conscious of your lazy tendencies...ie put your tv and cable remotes away and get up to change the channel. shit like that. also, snapple has a new meal replacement drink out called "snapple a day". they taste incredible and are a good alternative to snacking on fast food when you are on the go.

Check out a site with a Calorie Calculator, to figure out how many calories you need per day to either maintain your weight or lose around a pound a week. Be sure to eat less calories than needed to maintain. Although I don't recommend it to anyone (since it can be a little risky) I take a supplement to help me lose weight and burn fat. I wouldn't recommend it, as I said, but I took the risk since I was at one time 300 pounds on a 5' 11" frame (which is pretty risky in itself). If you think you need any sort of "help" like that, I definitely recommend that you see a licensed doctor for help in selecting the proper product.

Also, don't forget to excercise. It'll up your metabolism, help shape/tone your body and you'll be more inclined to watch what you eat, since you don't want to waste all your hard work. Even though you mentioned your main weight being stored in a centralized location, the best idea would probably be to do some aerobic training as well as some weight training, working the whole body not just the abdomen. Crunches are hard to beat for defining and strengthening abs, though.

Hope this helps a little!

yea both of those are good... but i used to be in your shoes i found that if you go to the gym and talk to some people that are really fit and ask them that they give the best advice for that and on one at the gym cares if you look like a whale or any thing if any thing they are happy that your working out and trying to get into shape... or at least at my gym

eat less and burn more. burn via aerobic exercise.

and don't worry about going to the gym.

but you don't _need_ a gym either, so don't let that stop you.
get some running shoes or bicycle or rollerblades.

just do something.

oh, and there's a Health and Fitness forum here now, should've posted in there ;)

Hey....somehting i could help out with!

First, realize that you cannot spot reduce. That is, to say, you cannot do some miracle aerobic workout targeted just at your abs....fat comes off in layers not clumps.

Some basics..

Eat 5-7 small meals a day.
Dont count calories. Its too hard and there are many negatives that im too lazy to list...
running for 20 min a day 3 times a week isnt going to cut it. You say your doing 6 miles each time....that isnt bad...make sure you are doing your max each time...if you could go for more time when your done....do it
Read this book...

Body for Life by Bill Philips

It isnt some miracle book about secret supplemnts or other stupid gizmos to make "those lbs float away"...its a simple book about hard work and smart choices.

Moderation and Steadiness are key....dont stop and dont over do it....

really...you should read that book...dont even buy it get it at the library.

oh..just a little more info..

3 years ago i was about 270 bls at 5'8''

I thought that in a year i would be a sexy machine.

Its been 3 years and im still not there yet...but im getting there...steadily

I see others who loose a few lbs then quit and gain it right back..

Just keep doing it....never give up

I now am around 200lbs at 6'2''. I cant see my abs yet but im close.

5'8" @ 165 lbs and you're embarassed to go to the gym?! I was 5'8" and 280 and I went!!

When it comes to working out at the gym, I have a saying... It's not about how you look, it's about how you WANT to look. It's not about how much you lift, it's that you're lifitng it. It's not about how you feel, it's about how you WANT to feel.

Besides, what BETTER place could you go where you're likely to find other overweight people in the same boat as you?? That's like being ashamed to go to AA because you're an alki!

ANYWAY, I seriously doubt you look as bad as you think. I weight 240 now and people think I look great, so sounds to me like it might be a little bit mental.
