My advice would be to take your time getting there. We flew into Miami and rented a car, then stayed a couple nights in Key Largo, a couple nights on Big Pine, then finally reached Key West. After a few nights there, we returned the rental car in Key West and flew back to Miami. Every Key is different, and there is a lot to see along the way. (I'm not big on food, so I can't recommend restaurants.)

Cool, so you will be getting out of Key West for a bit. We got a lot of great information from the book Hidden Florida Keys and Everglades: Including Key Largo and Key West (that's an Amazon link). Good if you like nature and local artists and things like that.

I was just there in November for four days. I agree on the drive down from Miami, did basically the same thing. it is a very nice drive. As for key West, I liked it a lot, but not sure how much more I could drink. Here is a good site for info: http://www.pubclub.com/keywest/index.htm
For food, it is not too far from the main strip I would reccomend Finnegans Wake. They have some of the best wings I have ever had. I think it is more of a local hangout, but they still treat tourists nicely (I had a great time). http://www.keywestirish.com/ is there web site... Hope this info helped
