Ranting about job life
 

this is more a rant, but I'm feeling incredibly exhausted about the situation right now.

I lost my job on Tuesday the 19th, after working at the company for about 8 months. My boss seemed to wanted to get rid of me and didn't begin to entertain any idea about any other possibilities.

I was popular throughout the whole company and there is now an outcry going, mostly among the executive staff. Ultimately though I don't think I will get my job back. Lots of drama.

Fortunately I start my new job next week (it's good knowing people).

(now for the reason why I posted this) I can't but help feel like a loser right now though. It really was a shock. I wasn't expecting, no one was expecting it. My support staff was all taken aback. My clientelle base found out and they are contacting the higher ups to complain and I feel partly well about that. Other then my boss, I got along amazingly well with everyone in the workplace, so I'm just feeling incredibly down and out.

I guess it's just kinda sad that I feel this way. I was more attached to the company then I realize, and now having that taken away from me made me realize how shallow I may be right now.

Don't let it get to you; people can seriously be real assholes- even the bosses. My boss is extremely self-absorbed, and makes hurtful comments at and to me in front of customers and other co-workers.

In real life, you are SUPPOSED to become attached to your job- it's something that gives you a paycheck, you make friends there, and you learn and gain experience there. But the good part about it, is that you were only there for eight months. You have a new job you are going into (and have many positive co-workers and clientele backing you up), and so you can start over. :)

I love my job & most of the people I work with, but I butt heads with my supervisor. I have a thirst for knowledge & like to find new, quicker, more organized ways of doing things, but she is stuck in the same old-same old. Luckily I move on to my own supervisory position in a few months then my underlings can gripe about me.

Don't let it get you down and you are certainly not a loser. You lost your job based on the opinion of one person. Unfortunately, that person happened to be the boss. The complaints from both employees and clients shows that the bosses feelings towards you was not the majority opinion. If you were truly that attached to your job, congratulations! Most people search their whole life and never find a job which which makes them that happy. I just hope you find that again.

I disagree. Jobs are just a paycheck and a means to an end. Getting attached only gives your employer more power (because you are likely to put up with more crap then you normally would for a job you are attached to).

It's always tough having to survive without a paycheck, even if it's only for a week. But it sounds like you've got something promising at the new place, so good luck to you. But hopefully you've learned that no matter how attached you might be to your job or how secure you think it is, you should always be looking for something else. Always have a backup plan.

Work sucks no matter who you're boss is. Even they will get their due. I'm stuck working for this a-hole right now, in 3 months he's only said one good thing to me, the rest is all negative, to "motivate" me. I'm fed up.

Keep your head up, you'll find something that is right for you, if this one doesn't. And that old boss will always be a dick.

I'll assume you didn't get fired for showing up to work drunk or something. That being said -

I think it is a badge of honor. Most people who have vision are shunned by coorporate America as a whole and individual jobs in general. People are uncomfortable with change and are predisposed to staying within whatever system or comfortable way of doing things they are used to.

Besides that - if we step back from the specific problems and listen to ourselves describe the problems we are having - it doesn't matter what their names are. Whether you work in a hospital, insurance company, a school or a manufacturer, the people are the same and the names are different. The same insecure people who are trying to deal with their specific issues through their interaction with you are still there.

Be healthy, focus on yourself and bettering your person and everything will be right as rain.

It's always wrenching to be fired or laid off when you're not expecting it and definitely don't deserve it. It's an emotional experience and can affect your sense of self-worth. How can this happen, you ask yourself, if I'm really doing a good job?

Well, it can happen. At many companies your immediate boss has the power to say who stays and goes no matter what the rest of the company thinks. If your bosses decide you must go, nobody will cross him, or her. Those are the limits to personal attachment in corporate life: the others like you, but they're not going to violate the org structure to help you. It's your manager's call and, asshole that he is, he made it.

This happened to me once. I was working for a manager I'd been close with because I thought he was a good guy, though incompetent; he seemed to appreciate my support. Then I realized that he was a user, not a friend, and I pulled back from being his buddy. He didn't like that. When there was a time for a layoff, he picked me, even though I was the most qualified in the department (the excuse was that because I was between projects, I was the best pick to go -- never mind that I knew every piece of business in the department.) Two weeks later, our director fired his ass for a particularly assisine decision, along with being generally incompetent. The director was on the edge of firing my boss, I guess, when my boss laid me off. But the director didn't countermand the decision: chain of command.

A few months later, the director left my old company and called me personally to offer me a position at his new company; and that felt good; it was closure, even though I didn't take the job.
