Self Haircuts

I have been thinking about cutting my own hair and was wondering if anyone else here does this sort of thing. Right now, all I need is a simple buzz cut (all hair uniformily under 1cm all over my head). Can this be accomplished by just buying a beard trimmer, adjusting it to the desired cut length, and going at it? I think it would be nice to never have to pay for a haircut ever again in my life.

If this all goes as planned, I'll post about it in the Living Well... well below your means thread. Thanks!

Yeah, I use a beard trimmer for my hair. $15 for the trimmer, and free haircuts for life. I'd recommend getting a trimmer that has a good set of attachments, otherwise you'll be stuck with one length. With the attachments, you can make the sides shorter or whatever you want.

I shave my own head too. All it takes is a 20$ electric shaver, a pair of mirrors (so you can see the back of your head), and a bathroom lined with newspaper for easy cleanup. I used to go to the hairdressing school and pay 6$ every month, that's not much but now I can cut my hair as often as I'd like for no charge. Which reminds me, cutting your own hair is even easier if you make sure to keep it really short by clipping it at least every 2 weeks.

Yeah I take 'er down to the wood every 2 weeks or so. Seeing as I am mostly bald to begin with it takes me about 10 minutes to do the whole job (but about 3 times that to clean the bathroom afterward).

Get a quality clipper ($20) iand keep it oiled.

I do the same thing; having two mirrors or a kind roommate is key! I don't mind the cleanup, since it forces me to sweep the bathroom semi-regularly.

I don't cut my hair anymore, but when I did, I went to the same guy from the time I was about 6 until last year. I trim my mom's hair for her, and also my brother's. They both have long hair, so it's just evening out and getting split ends off.

I couldn't stand paying some asshole to give me a bad haircut anymore so I bought a hair trimmer for $20. It's great, I trim it a little longer in the winter but will be taking it down to a couple of MM in the springtime once the rain stops.

I cut my hair by myself since I am about 16 or so. I am not really good at it but since I prefer a more punky look I don`t care if one side is longer thn the other or if there are some "holes"...

I cut my own hair. A number '1' all over. It only takes ten minutes.

I keep my hair short (3/4") all over, so I cut it myself. It may take a time or two to get the hang of lining it up in the back and on the sides, but it's not too bad. Get yourself a decent pair of clippers and a large hand held mirror. I've more than made up for the money I put into them in haircut savings. It is great having a fresh cut anytime you want.

Bought my variable beard trimmer and cut my hair this weekend. The picture truly sucks (looks like I have two dents on each side of my head because of the lighting) but it looks decent in real life.

If you are using scissors to cut your hair, the only thing you have to watch is that you are using very sharp scissors. Most household scissors aren't sharp enough and will end up leaving you with damaged ends.

How do you go about different lengths?
I like my hair shorter on the sides (1/2"-3/4"), and about 1 1/2" on the top. I get it all gradual though so there are no lines or obvious spots longer length. Is this possible by doing it yourself?

Possible, but (to the best of my knowledge) very very difficult. I'm not even sure if many beard trimmers will go out to 1.5", so you might not be able to find the right beard trimmer for the job. Then again, I'm sure there are non-beard trimmer trimmers that go out to 1.5". If I tried to do what you describe, (even if I had the right trimmer) I think it would be very difficult. But that's just me. I like simple. But don't let me stop you from trying. Cutting your own hair is at the very least ... an interesting experience. For me it was actually quite enjoyable. I had a stupid grin on the entire time I was cutting my hair.

I just started cutting my own hair about a month ago. Which reminds me I should trim it soon. Luckily for me I've got good hair that doesn't really need to be fancy to look nice, so I just use the biggest attatchment and blend it up. I dunno why, but it gives me a certain satisfaction in cutting it myself (though usually someone helps me for the hard spots.)

I am a female and had very long hair, almost to my waist and one night I took scissors and hacked my hair to just above my shoulders, layered and all. My first haircut ever and it turned out pretty good! I now wish I still had that long hair...

I cut my own hair most of the time. I'll go in and pay maybe once every six months just to make sure it's all even.

I cut my hair, my daughter's hair, and my husband's. I've been cutting peoples' hair since I was like 13. I used to want to be a hairdresser, but then I figured I'd get sick of doing it, so i didn't pursue it professionally. I wish I never ever went to salons, because I've rarely had a hairdresser know what to do with my hair. It's curly, but fine and they always fuck up the front by cutting it too short, leaving me with half a head of hair. Then I just have to wait for it to grow out again, and declare that I'll never go to a salon again. Then three years or so go by, and I make the same mistake all over again.

My wife cuts my hair, her own hair, and our childrens' hair... great way to save $$ that's for sure.

Just remember, the difference between a good haircut and a badhair cut... is usually only about 2 weeks.

I use a $25 hair clipper without an attachment (though I have them) and I like the fact that it's free and I can do it whenever I want.
