HELP! We Need a New Mattress!
So, I'm moving in with nwlinkvxd this summer (early June). Unfortunately, the only bed he has where he lives now is a twin bed. No way am I sleeping in that bed night after night!
He has a double bed frame, but the futon mattress is sagging and doesn't support us. We would like to transport the bed frame and then purchase a new or well-loved used mattress. However, we are on a tight budget. Does anyone know of a good place to purchase a cheap mattress in the bay area of California or online? |
Unfortunately, I live on the other side of the country so I can't help too much with pricing... But what I can say is that "used" scares the daylights out of me...
I'm not normally paranoid about disease or bacteria, but I've seen too many hotel blacklight tests to ever want to buy a used matress. |
I wouldn't buy a used mattress because bed bugs and other stuff are just too hard to get rid of.
What's your budget for a bed? CHeck the phone book for local furniture stores. www.1800mattres.com (though t hey are convenient not cheap) A fullsize mattress set (thats mattress and boxspring) in good quality, not great quality - will probably run about 300 bucks... and should include the frame. If you have any kind of back troubles or joint troubles, don't skimp on the mattress. you will pay for it later one |
Ikea always works for furniture (you have them in Emeryville and East Palo Alto)...I got my current (foam) mattress from them for about $100 and it's fine for me. (I prefer cheap foam mattresses to cheap spring mattresses). Of course they have better ones for more money. I would definitely not get a used mattress even if it's one of those from the Craigslist free section. Think of the things you do in bed. Now think of other people doing those things. In your bed. Right...

I've gotta agree with Mal. Buy a really cheap bed and regret it shortly thereafter.
|
I have a Simmons BeautyRest mattress (from the bowling ball commercials) and I love it. I'm not sure what they run these days though, I got mine a few years ago.
You could always get a cheap mattress and then buiy one of those "space age" foam toppers, or even a feather one. Those are nice too. |
there are some things that you just don't buy used... and a mattress is one of them.
i'd just search through the yellow pages. i have yet to find a town that doesn't have dozens of mattress outlets. also, sam's club has a wide range of mattresses for good prices if you're a member (only $35 to join). |
Ikea or try to find a Futon shop. You can get a reasonably sized futon and frame for a couple hundred dollars... much cheaper than a proper mattress and frame.
|
Keep checking the papers. We recently bought a whole bedroom set because we saw an ad for an unbeatable price. They had a bunch of mattresses at that time as well. Just get the Sunday paper every week and I am sure you will see one.

Don't skimp on a bed! Its a huge mistake that will come back to bite you!
If you like the feel of a futon, do what I did, splurge and get a nice one! I can't link directly to it, but go here and click on Michel. It is sooo comfy. The buttery soft leather around the base is soooo nice! http://www.kreaty.com/michel_2.jpg |
dont cut corners on your mattress! i bought a cheapy thing, mainly cos my wife fell in love with an expensive frame, the guy was trying to sell me an orthopedic blah blah for about $500 but i went for the cheap one.... after about 3 months it had so many springs poking all the time i burnt it and bought a good one!
just think about it... you are going to spend about half your life on it... its worthy of a little investment! |
42 years, on this planet, has given me the experience to be rightfully able to offer up to you the following advice; no used mattress...ever. You don't know who's been bumpin' uglies on it...nor, I think, do you want to. Not to mention the little night critters. Brrrrrr.
I know that you're young, and just starting out. Been there...done that...wore the t-shirt out, looong ago. There are things that you will be able to skimp on. Your mattress ain't one of 'em. Gotta eat dinner on a card table and folding chairs? So be it...for now. Think of it as making memories for you and nixelweed to talk about, when you're old and gray. But your mattress? Skimp on that and the only thing you'll be talking about, when you're old and gray, is your aching sciatica. |
Alright, so what do you guys suggest then? What kind of mattress is the best? How are foam matresses?
PS: We don't really like the futon look; it's just what his parents bought him when he was younger. |
Correction: SHE doesn't like the futon look. :D

A friend of mine describes my bed like this...
"Oh my, what a beautiful bed! Oh, oh my, how did my panties end up around my ankles?!" =P |
I agree with the standard mattress and use a foam top idea. I've been doing this for years. I could never go back to just a standard mattress now. The foam thingies only cost around $30 or so. No need to buy a super expensive bed as far as I am concerned.
|
Irishsean, how much did you buy the whole bed for? And where did you get it? And was their free delivery?
|
With the mattress and everything, your talking close to $2500 with delivery about 4-5 months later. I got a sweet deal thru a friend on mine, got it for about half price.

I ended up with a queen mattress with a box spring for just under $300 brand new. Not the best mattress in the world, but still pretty damn comfy. Check out local retailers, you have a better chance of arguing the price with them.
|
Also - make sure you try before you buy - find one that you both find comfortable. Lie on it for a while in the shop to get how it feels.
|
if you get a used one... just get vynal covers put it on em and there you go. no need to worry about what people did on the mattress.
the vynal makes noise, but not enough that it bothers me. i have it incase a cat goes mad and decides to take a leak on my mattress all that gets wet is the sheet. |
