Arms are striking against my deodorants. Help me smell good again.

Ok. My arms seem to "adjust" to the deodorants I am using. One may work for a while but after a few days it won't seem to work anymore and I gotta use a different one. Could it be because I have kinda dry skin and it's absorbing all the deodorant after a while and there's not much left or something? Any way to fix this?

drink more water

Seaver 03-06-2005 10:29 AM

As cowman said drink more water, get your hydration up.

And I use Old Spice stick deodorant, I find it works the best hands down of anything I've ever tried.

R3d 03-06-2005 11:01 AM

yea oldspice is great.. and drink lots of water..

Ultimate_Gohan 03-06-2005 02:34 PM

What are your eating habits like because diet plays a part in that as well. As for deoderant, I like axe myself because of the few ingrediants it has.

Undercover_Man 03-06-2005 05:34 PM

OK. First of all, I drink so much water that I take a piss about 6 times a day. I have a 24 Oz. bottle of water and fill it up every time I drink it all. Somehow water has taken over my Code Red craving. I love water and Earl Grey tea, hot, with 4 Equal's (sugar substitute).

Second of all, I don't eat breakfast (I sleep thru it if I can) and I usually have a late lunch and it's usually huge. I'm not on a diet because I have a really good metabolism rate. If I eat a large lunch then I will usually have a lateish small dinner. I eat until I am full. Sometimes I'm even too lazy/busy to eat so I ignore it until I'm around a kitchen. Sure it's not god eating habits but I'm not fat (well my waist could shrink about 1-1.5 inches), I'm healthy and full.

I'll check out Old Spice and Axe. But aren't those like sprays or something? Never used something in a can before. How you work those? Just point and shoot or something?

This has happened to me before, but never as quickly as for you. I think it may just be your body adjusting to it, similar to if you use certain shampoos, they eventually lead to limp hair, no matter what. I just switched brands/smells, and that was really all I could do.

Cowman 03-06-2005 07:00 PM

Undercover_man: Noone is saying that you don't drink a lot of water, but if you're feeling dry, then you're not drinking enough.

Seaver 03-06-2005 08:22 PM

Old Spice is a stick.

I've tried Axe, but it doesnt last more than a few hours (I'm a very active guy). Often I'll use Old Spice as the anti-persperant, and then Axe to smell nice.

Undercover_Man 03-07-2005 12:52 AM

Well on average I drink about 4-6 bottles of the water. I refil it tho; I don't use brand new bottles. So that's like what? 96-144 ounces of water per day. That's a lot of water. I've been drinking water like this for about a year and a half +/- 6 months.

I'll try Old Spice and see if that helps any.

irseg 03-07-2005 01:35 AM

Several years ago I went through that fiasco. I'd try a new brand of deodorant, have great results at first, end up with stinky armpits in 3-7 days, repeat. Only stuff that broke the cycle was Old Spice High Endurance. I've been using it ever since it came out (probably over 5 years now) and it's never let me down. Red Zone is at least as good, as well.

StephenSa 03-07-2005 08:17 AM

Try "Certain Dry". It's a roll on that you put on at night before you go to bed. It used to be prescription but now can be bought over the counter. Its not a deoderant, just an antipersparant. Your underarms WILL NOT sweat for a few days after you use it. You can still use deoderant if you like for a nice "perfumey" smell but without sweat you really won't need it.

hossified 03-07-2005 08:45 AM

old spice red zone...it's like a soft-stick (mix between gel and stcik)....stuff is awesome...works all day, no matter how much you do!!!

Undercover_Man 03-07-2005 01:08 PM

I'm right on top of the Old Spice Red Zone and I'll check out the Certain Dry and report back with results. Now I just gotta get off my lazy ass and get to the grocery store. It's gonna be extra hard to do that cause it's Spring Break over here for me.

MiSo 03-07-2005 01:25 PM

i've been using Secret for years and its the best out there imo.

you know the saying?.. Strong enough for a man, but ph balanced for a women

well, take it from me, it works great.
you might get a couple "err... why are you using a womens deoderant?"
but it works very well.

i use the spray on, and sometimes the stick (although i preferer the spray on its more expensive).

both handle the job like a champ. try it for yourself.

Manuel Hong 03-08-2005 10:48 AM

Try the Thai deoderant stick. It's solid mineral salt, it's doesn't stop the sweating (which is better for you than anti-perspirants), but it does get rid of the stink of day-old-chicken-soup.
It's available at heath food stores.

bookie05 03-08-2005 09:21 PM

What works for me really well is the Speed Stick 24/7 antiperspirant. Everything else used to do the job for a little while (2-4 weeks), but after that I would adjust and have to move on.

Iliftrocks 03-09-2005 08:38 AM

You might be drinking too much water, that can be bad also. Flushes out all da minerals and such, or so my pharmacist sister and law and my doctor say. This gallon a day BS might be necessary in the desert...... Just drink enough that you aren't thirsty all the time.

I also have to rotate through deoderants, right now I use Axe. I'll use about anything, I have no problem using my wife's stuff, if I feel the need. If someone mentions you smell like a woman, tell em it's just wishful thinking, or something about "At least I have a woman" blah blah You could just punch em, heh heh

TonySpilotro 03-14-2005 03:01 PM

I just started using that Old Spice Red Zone shit and it is righteous. Blows everything else out of the water, hence the extra dollar or two that you pay for it. May I suggest using Certain-Dri twice a week with Red Zone on the other days. Make sure they don't recommend against that before you try it though...

Minorci 03-15-2005 07:18 PM

If you are talking about a smell, and deoderants do nothing to help, bacteria causes that god awful smell, go buy an antibacterial soap and use it when you shower, worked perfectly for me.

Undercover_Man 03-15-2005 10:03 PM

^^^
I use Irish Spring. The blue one. That's antibacterial soap isn't it? I love the smell of it. I still haven't bought the Old Spice or the Certain Dry yet. One of my deodorants seem to be working right now and that's good cause right now I'm FLOODED with work. I've been staying up til 5AM working non-stop except for small breaks like this one and going to school. I will try out the two things as soon as my deodorant stop working again or until the week is over. I wish the week was over already.

squirrelyburt 03-17-2005 10:59 AM

Oh man!!I hate this!! I used to love the old spice and it worked really well, but now it just won't cut it. I drink plenty of water and typically don't have an odor. Just had to switch, suppose I'll have to keep switching brands.

Undercover_Man 03-19-2005 05:42 PM

Ok...I got the Old Spice Red Zone invisible solid and the Certain Dri. Now it says to apply at bedtime. Well what if I take a shower every night before bed? It also says do not use immediately after bathing. So I'd be safe like 30 minutes after I take my shower right? And my bedtime usually is around 2AM-6AM. Should I put this stuff on earlier than that or what? I'm not active at that time of night. Just sitting at my computer typing away or watching TV.

lordpoopshank 03-20-2005 11:52 PM

Old Spice High Endurance

StephenSa 03-21-2005 09:05 AM

I shower at night as well and put on the Certain Dri about an hour after my shower. I'm sometimes still up for a while and have had no problems. As long as you aren't workin up any major sweat right after you apply you should be fine.

I second Speed Stick 24/7, it works great.

MPower 03-22-2005 02:33 PM

I switch deodorant brands about every 6mo or so or whenever they stop working. My body seems to build up an immunity also. I go from dry to gel to spray and vary the brands and no problems anymore.

Undercover_Man 03-22-2005 08:23 PM

WOW..that Certain Fri works for me!!! Thanx guys!!!! The Old Spice I picked out Idon;t like too much so I'll just get another smell next time...

fatbob 03-23-2005 03:17 AM

clarins mens is good.
smells good, not too strong but strong enough.

CoachAlan 03-24-2005 03:26 PM

I think you have to keep experimenting until you find a deodorant that matches your body chemistry. I've tried Speed Stick and Old Spice, and they don't seem to work for me. Gilette Clear Gel, however, works wonders.

Over time, body chemistry can change, and that may be why you are cyclically needing new deodorants. When you find something that works, use it until it stops working. If there's still a good portion left, keep it until the new stuff stops working, then switch back. This makes economic sense, and shouldn't clutter your medicine cabinet too much.

Hampshire 03-29-2005 01:14 PM

i am also very sensitice with deoderants. Try the mitchum gel one, i use the sport one. It smells really good and doesnt give me a rash. Also, try the toms deoderant, it comes in a tan container, although its not very strong at all. Sometimes switinching deoderants every few months helps also. I hope i helped , thanks!

questone 04-22-2005 07:07 PM

I suggest using Certain-Dri twice a week with Red Zone on the other days.

fluster 04-24-2005 12:53 AM

I've come across this problem and have had to switch brands as well.

Does anyone else worry about the health effects anti-perspirants may have on them? I mean it is normal to "perspire", there is a reason for it.

I prefer Deodarants but I I find that they don't always keep the smell away. I'm happy to sweat a little if it can keep the smell away.

Anti-perspirants are a worry. I can not use one for a few days and scrub under my arms each night in the shower and still smell the stuff. That can't be good.

Tophat665 04-24-2005 05:37 AM

It's a radcal solution, but, when my deoderant stops working (as happens every year or so), I shave my pits. It seems to work. Less funk gets trapped in the hair, and the deoderant works again, and countinues to work after the hair grows in (for a while.)

Also, how often do you shower? Whatever it is, double it.

Hain 04-25-2005 05:54 AM

Undercover Man, I had the same problem. Some have already suggested switching from dry sticks to gel brands, and that has not failed for me yet. When my pits get an immunity to the gel, I just use a dry stick for a week and back to normal.

Xell101 04-26-2005 11:29 AM

If the spirit moves you give Arm and Hammer: Antipersperant/Unscented dry stick a shot if you haven't already. I tried over 5 brands to no avail before buying this fantastically effective type, the rest I've used didn't really do much of anything or felt real wierd.
