What can you "get" from sharing a straw?
 

I was thinking about this earlier and was just wondering what diseases, viruses, etc. could be transferred if sharing a straw with someone that has such an ailment?

Would sharing the straw be the same as kissing someone in terms of what "ailments" can be passed to one another? Or no? Less chance, more?

One of my professors often talks about AIDs, STDs, and such, and how by not using protection when having sex, sexually active students are putting their lives at risk every day.

This made me wonder what one could pick up by just sharing a drink via straw, and if even that, is considered "risky business."

Ok..
sharing a straw is the same as sharing saliva. So it's equivelent to kissing, or spitting in each others mouths. So anything you can get from sharing saliva you can get from sharing a straw.

That means: colds, the flu..well..I mean any bug that can be transferred via saliva.


AIDS however can only be transferred via blood and semen. So unless both you and your friend had a cut in your mouth and were leaving blood on the straw, you could not get aids from sharing a straw.

STD's is really a broad word..

You can get mono from it.. I think that's how I got it when I was in high school.

Hepatitis, MUCH more communicable than most people realize.

There is a vaccine for Hepatitis, right? And if yes, does the vaccine prevent all types?

Of the ailments listed so far, Hepatitis seems to be the "worst."

Hepatitis requires a blood transfer..

you can get Herpes, Sucks. Always keep an eye out for those cold sores!!

There are two types of herpes, one can be transferred via salivia, one can not.

hepatitis b is transfered by body fluids but hepatitis a can be transfered mouth-to-mouth. yes, there are vaccines available, usually separate for a and b. for hepatitis b, usually you need to go in three times to get the shots in succession.
