Sirius / Brokers
Two questions: Is Sirius, the satellite radio station, a good initial investment for a novice person like myself? I'm looking at buying shares at $6 dollars per share at this time.
Second, what's a good online broker to go through? thanks |

Question 1: Depends on what your buying criteria is. What do you like about Serius? What other stocks do you own? How long do you plan to hold it - for some pre-determined period of time or until it reaches a certain price - if so, what price? Or "forever or until I need it, whichever comes first"?
Question 2: - Again the answer you don't want to hear, but is the truth, is "it depends". What do you forsee your stock/bond/fund buying practices being over your lifetime? You plan to buy and sell frequently? Or buy and hold for long periods? Do you expect to buy lots of individual stocks only? Or mutual funds also? There are some deep discount brokerages, scott-trade, e-trade (maybe higher now? I haven't checked lately) but they aren't going to give you much help. My advice would be to do some investment reading on your own before you decide on either (Sirius or a brokerage). Get on Amazon.com and search for some basic investment books and start reading the reviews - quickly you'll figure out the 2 or 3 best books to start with that fall in line with your investing interests. If reading a book or two sounds to burdensome, then I would advise avoiding individual stocks altogether because doing so requires serious research, unless you're happy just guessing and getting advice from friends and message boards. The more I type, the less helpful I feel like I'm being today. Maybe I should quit before people stop before I start running people out of this forum... |
