I've struggled with the whole weight loss thing too. About 2 or 3 years ago I lost 45 pounds. I have managed to keep most of it off, but I did put on a little when I started my teaching job last year mainly because of stress. I am working towards getting it off though. It's still hard though because my emotions tend to dictate my food choices. I'm trying to work that out but it takes a long time.
I think the key to beginning weight loss is really working on your mind and your emotions. If you sit around telling yourself that you are a fat slob, then you probably will remain that way, because it's what you believe. I know some of you are going to think this is totally cheesy but hear me out before you laugh. I read Dr. Phil's book "The Ultimate Weight Solution." Seriously it is an awesome book. It completely reprogrammed the way I think. You have to really want to lose weight when you read this book though, because it's not magic. It gave me a whole different perspective on life and on food. Everything in the book is very practical and it is a life long plan, not just a quick-fix diet. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with weight.

Couldn't agree more. Truth, I haven’t weighed myself in a months, I'm really curious, but I know that scales can lie. None of my old clothes fit I went from a 38 to a 29 , and I see a difference so I know its coming off. I have added a little bit of weight training into my routine, so I know that my weight loss has slowed down because of the increase of muscle. Congrats Liv, way to go girl. Are you going to celebrate with a big bowl of ice cream?

Well, last time I tried this, I kinda failed miserably, well not miserably, but it only took me three months to put back on the 20 lbs I lost. Why? Pretty simple, I'm a boredom eater, that's right, boredom. Nothing to do? How 'bout I sit back and eat this big ol bag of dorito's start to finish. Also, I tended to drink whole milk pretty much exclusively, about 1/2-3/4 of a gallon every day. What's scary is I level off in weight at about 238.5. Every day on the scale, same time, same weight. I could get away with it. Except my lean body mass is in the neighborhood of 175lbs. And I know I can do better. Don't worry I'm not here to get sympathy, only to have a few people wondering why I suddenly stopped updating my weight and calling me out on it. I think.
The sudden unhappiness with my weight has been brought on by my discovery of a love for rock climbing and hauling my 238.5lbs up the face of a rock wall isn't as easy as say, hauling my 190lbs-Duh. My strategy for weight loss is pretty simple, it all boils do to how many calories you use vs. how many you eat. Since I'm already pretty active, I cut down to 2000 cal/day max. I also cut out pretty much all junk food(except some ice cream now and again, but it all gets counted) I've replaced my chips/soda in my lunch with water and oranges/kiwi. I've also discovered if I have to have something flavored gatorade is pretty good. At 50 cal/cup it has about half as many calories as soda. So far It has worked pretty well, i've gone from 238.5lbs to 233 lbs at my pre-dinner weigh ins in just 13 days. With improving my climbing as a main goal I'm setting my target for 190 lbs. Seems major, but I can do it, if I really want to.

gatoraide has a ton of refined sugar, which messes with your glycogen level, which leads to fat storage.
if you want to lose weight, one thing that really helps is to stay away from processed/refined foods like bleached white flour, refined sugar, high fructose corn syrup and any hydrogenated oils. that means most things in a box besides shredded wheat and triskets! actually, there are quite a few good cereals in places like whole foods, you just have to read the box and be an informed consumer! there are some pretty good flavored waters out there that don't have the density of gatoraide but do tatse good. about the only time gatoraide is good is if you are working out, need an electrolyte replacement and can't get your hands on any of the other ones like cytomax, accelerade, etc. |

So...It's been a week, and just before bed I find the scale reading 227.5, thats 11 lbs in 3 weeks, pretty good I think, hopefully I can keep this up. On a somewhat encouraging note, most of my pants are becoming too loose in the waist, as my gf has pointed out my butt seems to be disappearing. So I can now fit into a waist size smaller pants.

And like I said, if you need the electrolytes - which I consume when working out - why not get them from a better source? You need energy hauling those shingles...so use what endurance athletes use. I would very highly reccomend Accelerade for your job as it combines electrolytes with a small amount of protein that fuels your muscles. And complex carbs are also needed for that kind of work. As for the weight loss results - great job and keep it up!! I read everywhere that 1-2 lbs a week is plenty, especially if you want to keep it off for the long-term. So if things even out, don't worry, just keep moving that needle.

I'm not exactly sure what "empty" carbs are, my assumption is it's something like empty calories which comes from a low nutrient density. I can assure you however these sugars do much more than just take up space, glycolysis is one of, if not, the most efficient/important process in the body for creating energy from foods. Also your body does store glucose in the form of glycogen for when your glucose demand increases beyond what is readily available in the cells/bloodstream. You do not have to keep consuming them as soon as they are used, consuming them shortly after/during use helps the body keep steady levels of glucose and aids recovery. If you ran out of glucose and didn't have any stored you would very quickly enter a sorry state of being. The protein doesn't do much unless you aren't getting enough in your diet otherwise. Thanks for the encouragement though, it helps to know people are on your side. While I haven't really leveled off yet, I know it's coming, drops like this don't hold off forever, I just hope it happens somewhere around 200 lbs so I only have to kick the exercise into high gear for the last 10 lbs or so.

Hektore:
My bad on the refined sugar thing with Gatorade. You are quite right and I stand corrected! It does contain sucrose and not refined sugar. I guess I have a mental block and just think Gatorade isn’t the best product you can be putting in your body after all I learned about sports nutrition from riding bikes 50-100 miles and other work out routines. Gatorade is easy to pick up at most stores whereas you have to mix up Accelerade yourself so it's not as easy. Sucrose isn’t a refined sugar. The stuff you get in a bag that is bright white is refined. And any ingredient list with just the word sugar is refined sugar. Sugar is very bad for you, as is high fructose corn syrup, which can actually be addictive – but “they” don’t want you to know that because it is extremely sweet, extremely inexpensive and has a long shelf life. Oh, and did I say it can be addictive? Or perhaps that’s an urban myth. You may think you don’t need protein but the fact that you are working hard the way you are tends to say you do. A few facts on protein in a sports drink: • delivers more carb energy to your working muscles • extends your endurance as much as 29% more than a regular sports drink like Gatorade or Power Aide • reduces muscle damage • helps your muscles recover faster so you’ll feel stronger If you want to know more regarding the benefits of protein in electrolyte drinks I recommend the study results available here: http://www.poweringmuscles.com/ResearchYouCanUse.pdf Give it a shot…you’ll be amazed at how good you feel. Now, a few things about “empty” cabs: Excess, empty carbohydrate intake stimulates your body to produce large amounts of insulin and insulin activates the main enzyme responsible for making cholesterol in your liver. Empty carbs include refined (white) flour, refined sugar and alcohol. The extra calories from all that sugar are turned into body fat. Plus, because empty carbs have few nutrients to slow down digestion, they're quickly converted to glucose. They rush through the bloodstream and stomach too fast, leaving you feeling hungry again. And that can lead to overeating. The best carbs come packed with fiber and some protein, and are close to how nature made them. The more processed they are (lots of ingredients you can't pronounce is a sign), the worse they are. I'm sure yuo can find a ton of research on empty carbs if you look around. Just remember: if there's no nutritional value it just doesn't make sense to waste space in your diet for it. Of course, dark beer and good wine don't count! Ha Ha!!

My humble opinion is like a lot of others here. It takes self motivation to get going for most people, however, a good friend can assist in getting you in the mood to work out. I normally work out alone but often like to have a spotter or somewhere who is in better shape there to push me a little and encourage me.

i sure do better at most sports where i play with others that are better. it usually motivates me to focus more on what i'm trying to do and be a bit more serious.
i'm especially like that with golf. if i'm by myself and hit a few lousy shots, i might get a flip attitude. however, with someone else i try to put it behind me at make the next one count! plus, i'm usually hopng for a new good tip i can put into practice. i'm sure it's the same way for weight loss. |
