[crying] My mom leaked info that she might have liver cancer. What does this mean?

Hey there,
My mom accidentally leaked info about her maybe having liver cancer. What is liver cancer? I don't like the word cancer. Cancer = death. Is liver cancer deadly? I can't think or type right now. She's only told 2 or 3 ppl and I wasn't supposed to know. Any info would be nice. Be sure to include her in your prayers plz.

I don't know much about liver cancer. But I'm REALLY sorry to hear about this. I'll be thinking about her wellbeing as often as I can.

First of all Cancer DOES NOT EQUAL DEATH.

I am 34 years old and was recently diagnosed with Thyroid cancer (papillary carcinoma) and had my thyroid removed about two weeks ago. My cancer was localized and did not appear to have metasticized to any where else. I will under go some radioactive iodine imaging to confirm this, and then undego some additional high doses of radiactive iodine to kill any remaining thyroid cells in my body. This is likely to eradicate all traces of carcimona from my body.

My prognosis is very good, with a 90 percent chance of survival beyond 10 years. On the plus side this is a very rare cancer, and even rarer in males, so I have some of the best doctor's around interested in my situation.

Liver cancer has several different stages of diagnosis, and several treatment options depending on stage, and similarly several different prognosis depending on the stage of the cancer and any metastisis. While not having prognosis' as optimistic as my cancer, I must repeat that cancer DOESNOT equal death.

The links to web MD looked helpful, but I offer the following to you on a personal level:

1. Your mother is scared out of her mind. Be there for her, however she needs you.
2. Come to terms with this disease. It is important to realize, as I have that we will all die eventually, and it seems more and more likely that cancer of some sort will play a role in all of our lives.
3. The medical sciences, particularly oncology and radioactive medicine, have improved by vast strides in the last 20 years. Most cancers if caught early enough have excellent prognosis, and many who suffer from these diseases go on to live normal productive lives.

My heart goes out to you, and my prayers are with your mother and your family.

Best,

-bear

Just an anecdote: More than a decade ago, my brother's mother-in-law (then in her early 80s) was diagnosed as having probable liver cancer. They went in and took out the tumor (at her insistence); she's still alive more than a decade later.

I'm not saying that all cases are so positive, but don't freak out before learning more about it.
