Can one suffer physically from emotional or mental issues?

So I've had a flu/fever for almost a week now, my insomnia has been taken to extremes as well as my headaches. Just wondering if this could be tied into other areas such as stress or emotional problems etc..

short answer: absolutely.

Stress almost always slops over into the physical realm, cuaisng everything from insomnia to heart-attacks.

I haven't been sick since February 5, 2001, and I would say that it's almost entirely due to a lack of stress in my life.

Yeah, the end results can become physical. Take care of yourself. Drink lots of water, eat fruits and try to get some sleep or relax (if you can't sleep).

Take it easy !

I'm pretty sure certain types of stress can lower your immune system.

I vaguely remember there being 'good stress', too. That freaky pit in your stomach before giving a speech for class is good, but I'm assuming a fight with your significant other is bad stress.

Bad stress can indeed make you physically ill.

Stress can cause headaches, as well. That's part of where a migraine can come from, if memory serves correctly. It can also cause problems in your sleep pattern, and your quality and length of sleep may be diminished. Once that happens, anything can happen physically.

Yes. You'll have to learn how to handle stress. Sorry, but I don't have a way around that.

Exercise, yoga, other such methods, work for various people. Others I've been or run into have treated the symptoms using TUMS or Rolaids or whatever, 'cause with the group I was in, the symptoms tended to show up as gastrointestinal issues. These days, they sometimes show up as headaches. I find exercise helps me.

inharmony 10-13-2004 06:38 AM

I've been there done that...exercise for me is key. Hope you start feeling better.

Yes it can. Me myself have been in a mild drepression for months now. It was getting worse but I have found some ways to fight back. I have some weeks with insomnia, and others where I just want to go to bed and not get out of it. Physical pain in my stomach and neck due to stress. slow recovery from when I can get into the gym on bad weeks aswell. I agree. Exercise is the key. it gives you something else to focus on.

Great, just great. Well I guess I knew sorta but it's good to hear from others. Time to formulate a plan I suppose, thanks again.

Simple plan - make your life easier. Simple exercise (30 min/day); don't supersize - in fact, watch "Supersize Me". Join a gym and become part of a group. Might sound tough, but join that aerobics class. (Besides - aerobics are best for you.)

It absolutely can. I've been sick twice so far this semester, and stress has been attributed to the cause of it. I've all but been TOLD OUTRIGHT that I needed to drop some classes and take it easy.

There was a really good article posted on fark.com today about the relations of stress and sickness - it basically said that there is scientific evidence (and has been for quite some time) that shows that your immune system shuts down on you when you are overly stressed, causing you to get sick easier.
