PCOS, anyone?

I was just wondering if any of the other folks out there had ever dealt with PCOS before, either as someone who has it themselves or a supporter of someone who does...

PCOS is the happy little letter abbreviation for Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome, a disease that actually effects more women than people realize. As of this time it is uncureable, though treatable, and can cause all sorts of unpleasant things to happen to your body.

Here's some statistics I found {http://pcos.itgo.com} to give a better view of the issue:

•6-10% of all Females; ages 8+ years, have PCOS

•30% of all PCOSers register as Insulin Resistant

•50% of all PCOSers are overweight

•Up to 40% of “Unexplained Infertility” patients are actually PCOS and don't even know it!

•30% of all PCOSers do not present cysts

•20% of “Abnormal Glucose Tolerance” tests are PCOS

•40% of “Abnormal Glucose Tolerance” develop diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance by age 40

•75% of all IVF (in-vetro fertilization) patients deliver a singleton

•20% of all IVF patients deliver twins

•5% of all IVF patients deliver triplets

•25% of normal pregnancies end in miscarriage

•35-40% of PCOS pregnancies end in miscarriage. This is a 10-15% increase risk over 'normal' pregnancies.

Symptoms of PCOS include, but are not limited to {http://pcos.itgo.com}:
•Oligomenorrhea (Irregular) menses
•Amenorrhea (Absent) menses
•Alopecia (thinning of scalp hair)
•Hirsutism (excess unwanted hair)
•Hypertension (High B/P)
•Pregnancy complications, Infertility
•Endometriosis
•Persistent Anemia (low iron levels)
•Forgetfulness, ‘fog brained’, lack of concentration
•Cysts in many, but not all cases; Enlarged ovaries
•Weight Issues, Obesity (Centered around midsection)
•Acrochordons (skin tags), Acne, Acanthosis Nigricans (patches), Seborrhea (dandruff), Hidradenitis Suppurativa, other skin problems
•Chronic pelvic pain, migraines/headaches, bloating, water retention, swelling of hands/feet
•Frequent Yeast Infections, Urinary Tract Infections, Bladder issues
•Hyperandrogenism (+ testosterone, androstenedione &/or DHEAS)
•Restless Limb Syndrome, Sleeping problems
•Shaking, heartburn, uncontrollable hunger &/or mood swings before or after a meal
•Hyperinsulinemia (+ insulin levels), Insulin Resistance, Diabetes
•Depression, thoughts of ugliness, suicide or wishing to be dead/never born, feelings of worthlessness, low self-esteem, feeling less of a woman.

You're probably wondering just a bit why I felt the need to do this posting. Well...

About two years ago, I was diagnosed with PCOS myself... being a stubborn brat, I'd refused to go to the doctor's about the problems/symptoms I was having (I HATE DOCTORS). I'd actually started showing symptoms when I was about 12 or 13 years old, but I ignored it and let the issue go untreated for over 5 years.

Now that I know the seriousness of the situation, I'm kind of hoping in some small way to keep it from happening to other people. We're already quite certain that I can't have my own children, and my blood pressure just gets higher every day. I've been through the depression and the unbelievable pain associated with it all, and still have problems on a regular basis.

At any rate, if you think you (or a close relation, friend, significant other) might be falling into any of these categories, please have them go to a doctor... if they're not comfortable going to a specialist, have them at least go to a gynocolegist, or to their physician.

If you or someone you know has already been diagnosed, I have a link to another BBS run by a woman who has PCOS herself. It's specifically for conversation and membership by women who have PCOS, might have it, are curious about it, and the family and friends who support and aid them everyday. I don't feel it is appropriate to post the link directly on this board, since I might get removed or something, but if you would like it please just send me a PM and I can get it to you.

Hopefully educational,

-+ Ivy +-
