I searched and didn't find a thread that specifially addresses this, though there were a lot of references to it...
have you ever been to a nutritionist? What exactly do they do? What are the benefits of going to one?

Sorry, I've never actually visited a nutritionist. I have read up a fair amount on the subject however. So far the best book i've read on Athletes nutrition is Chris Carmichael's "Food for Fitness"
It is written with endurance athletes in mind so if that's not your game then you probably wouldn't find it helpful.
