The place where I met most of my friends was in the Alcohol Awareness class I was forced to go to after being caught by the RA's with beer in my dorm room. It was a Sat. morning that they made us do this class which to me sounded pretty lame, but we ended up playing 'alcohol jeopardy' which we won because we had a serious pot-head in our group and unlike the other pot-heads, he wasn't stoned in class and could answer drug questions correctly. After class a bunch of us got together and that night went out. I'm no longer friends with any of them, but I am together with people that I met through them. And that's all you need...make connections with people, get to know their friends..cuz sometimes their friends are cooler than they are...haha...sorry personal experience popping out....but yeah...you are probably a little homesick...A small, smelly ugly dormroom can really make you wish for your old room back home...but just remember to get out...go watch a game with people from your floor.....RA's jobs pretty much run around with either busting people for noise, drugs, and alcohol or trying to organize group events...I know, cuz I dated one a couple years ago...they thrive on group stuff so don't be affraid to go up and ask one about stuff to do...just look at all their tacky colorful signs they hang up everwhere...blah! You can recognize them a mile away because they have abnormally large grins on their faces when they aren't pissed...And...I'm rambling, sorry...if you ever do get busted like I did, just remember there is payback. My girlfriends and I attacked the Head Resident's car with a Costco size pack of toilet paper and a garden hose that was nearby. So...college can be fun. I go to Chico State in Ca. where every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights are fucking crazy! I love college...I hope you at least see some of the enjoyment that I do out of living away from the parents.

Well, this is also my first year in college.

It's pretty good, i'm away from my parents, so i could do whatever the hell i want. But, i still stay responsible. I'm living in an apartment, it's nice and roomy, and private, but i kinda regret it, cuz i'm away from everything.

I joined up with the Chinese American Student Association (CASA) and am really really active in it. It's really good, cuz it keeps me busy, and happy...and social...and meeting alot of people.

Groceries and bills really suck. I want to save up for a turbocharger for my mustang, but with groceries costing $80 / 2 weeks, i'm really running low on money...not to mention rent, and cable.. Poo.

I'm really not used to the class schedules. It used to be, go to school for 7 hours, then get home, do hw, and other stuff. Now i gotta do stuff in between classes and stuff, which i really don't like.

Went to a really good party this weekend, and got drunker than ever. Came close to puking, but luckily i didn't. I had a really really good time there though, it was good because i kinda already knew everyone, they were mostly from CASA and i play on a football team w/ alot of them too.

I think college is mostly about time organization.

Oh, and girls....for some reason, they tend to ignore me. But i guess it comes with the territory of being a freshman. Ahhh the loneliness sometimes

I found this thread, and decided to chime in with my experiences so far as a frosh:

- The open door Remember, this is reciprocal - I spent a couple nights walking around the other dorms for people with their doors open and met a few people that way. On one of those walks, I saw a group of ladies hanging out and stopped in and said hi....One of them had a computer prob. and I fixed it pretty quickly, we chatted, and ended up in a really good group of friends and now, I hang out with 2/3 days a week. [about 5/6 other ladies and another guy ]

- Remember not everyone you met in a club that you seems to enjoy hanging out with will end up being your friend. Lack of time, and inability to see each other - especially on a big campus; countless other factors; it just happens.
There was a few kids that I hanged out with on the first couple days, but haven't really seen them since.

- If you feel depressed for extended time, remember there's probably a counseling clinic on campus, and you can receive help there or they can refer you to a physchologist there [or they may have some on staff if it's a large enough school]. [no extra cost, besides tuition @ my school]

- activities. do them. I've met tons of people that way, especially upperclassmen who can give you good advice or even become a good acquatince or friend.

One thing that I've still need to improve on is keeping open for new ones. Although everyone was really friendly the first couple weeks, a lot of people are already in their own little groups; and I'm still trying to branch out and meet more [although maybe expanding too much, since I do already have a good group, but I don't want to limit myself to them] but it's a bit difficult since some have their own groups and feel awkward for you to sit down with them.
Another quandry of mine is going to activities/concerts/events by myself. I feel confident enough to attend on-campus things on my own, but there was a comedy improv show downtown I'd like to go; though I don't want to go by myself [it's about a 10 min. walk to get there].

Start early meeting people - everyone else is nearly in the same boat that you are.

catcha back on the flipside,
will.

My first year was in the dorm, but I transferred in as a junior due to two years in a community college. Most of the others in the dorm were freshman or sophomores. Our "hall" (which was actually about 1/8 of the entire third floor) had 25 rooms so about 50 guys, but we had a meeting right away to introduce the RA & everybody said who they were, where from, etc. From that point on we all hung out (some more than others), played broomball, volleyball, went rock climbing, etc. Sure there were some idiots but some great guys too. I can still remember about half of their names, and that was 15 years ago.

The following year I joined a frat and those guys I still see regularly, almost all of them. We did just about everything together & out of the 40 or so when I was there, I still keep in contact with about 30 of them plus a bunch of the alumni that were there before me.

My advice: go out & check out the college clubs, frats, and groups. They have a group or house for just about everybody with any interest. Now turn off the computer & find one you like!
