Cutting your own hair

has anyone done it? regret it? like it? spending 16 bucks a month on haircuts for the rest of my life doesn't sound like fun. some people tell me it's difficult but i figure it wouldn't be too hard for me 'cause my hairstyle is basically a number 2 all around. should i go 4 it and if so what kind of equipment would i need? thanks

thespian86 08-14-2004 02:39 PM

Good luck with that, I hope you have thick skin...

maleficent 08-14-2004 03:08 PM

The problem with cutting your own hair in most cases is the scissors, regular all purpose scissors aren't sharp enough, the ends of your hair don't get really clean cuts, so it end up damaging the ends of your hair.

You are doing it in the mirror, and it's hard to see wehre you are cutting, and getting it even, especially the back of your hair.

I'm not sure if men's hair is easier to cut then women's hair is, but, I'd leave it to the professional. 16 dollars a month is just a little over 50 cents a day, you probably spend more than that on soda/pop/favorite beveredge, leave it to the professional, or find that old italian barber who charges 8 bucks...

westothemax 08-14-2004 03:09 PM

I usually do it myself. I mean if you're just using clippers with a #2 guard all over your head, then it's pretty easy. You might need someone to help you with the back of your head, though it's doable by yourself.

A hair cutting kit including scissors, clippers, and guards from #1 to #6 ran me about $27.

rockzilla 08-14-2004 03:13 PM

All you need are a pair of clippers. I paid $14 for mine at the grocery store. And if it's all the same length, it's kinda hard to mess things up. Just throw a bunch of newspapers down on the floor, position yourself between two mirrors (so you can see the back of your head) and go nuts.
Otherwise you could just look for a hairdressing school, you'll pay a lot less and, like I said, it's pretty hard to mess up a haircut like yours.

i just did.. #2 all around, #1 to clean up the back and side burns, #0 to clean up hair line.
the back of your head isnt really that hard. your feel the curve of your neck/head so youll know when to stop. but if you really wanna clean up your hairline with a #0 then thats where youll probably need help. i had my dad clean up the back with a zero, round it out and it wasnt bad at all.

having 2 large mirrors helps also. so go for it man!

pocon1 08-14-2004 05:48 PM

I have been doing it for a year now, 17 dollar razor, 1/4 inch of hair, do it myself. Yeah, it's easy, looks ok, and it is easy to maintain. Of course, you have to be really really good-looking to pull of this manly style.

tehblaed 08-14-2004 08:16 PM

16 a month? I get my haircut maybe once every 4 months and I only spend 13 bucks at the hair cuttery.

wilbjammin 08-14-2004 08:43 PM

I use scissors... normal scissors... and a mirror. I haven't had any problems. I use my fingers as a guide to measure with. This is about the 4th year in a row that I've cut my own hair. I had help for about a year, and I grew out my hair all through high school and the beginning of college. Before then, my hair was more my parents responsibility than mine.

Latch 08-14-2004 11:22 PM

Yeah.. I've only done it when I had a buzz cut and could just run the clippers over it all..

JStrider 08-15-2004 07:25 PM

mines a pretty easy cut... short on the sides... and a lil bit longer on top... long enough to spike....

i usuallly get it cut every 3-4 months and i pay like $8 plus a 2 tip... sometimes i go a bit too long between cuts and its really shaggy when i get it cut... b ut thats alright...

Memalvada 08-15-2004 07:27 PM

Ive never done it, but if you say you'd use a #2 all round, then i guess its fairly easy, but u know what they say: practice makes perfect ;)

Manic_Skafe 08-15-2004 09:11 PM

Unless you plan on using a clipper to cut your hair the same lenght all the way around - don't do it. I pay a barber 7 bucks every week to every other week just to keep my light beard looking nice. It's a small price that I'm more than willing to pay a skilled professional in order to make sure I look nice. If the price is too much then find another shop that rests easier with your wallet.

Bear in mind that most barbers are liscensed professionals at cutting hair and in all the times you've been to barber shops - when have you ever seen a barber cut their own hair?

Supple Cow 08-15-2004 09:18 PM

It just takes practice. I was golden by my second self haircut and I'm working with dull scissors and longish woman hair. The worst that can happen with what you're doing is that you'll miss a little tuft and it will stick out until somebody notices and tells you. I mean, you ARE going to you a safety, right?

anti fishstick 08-15-2004 10:04 PM

yup, i cut my own hair. I've been doing it for years since I decided I didn't want to pay $15-20 for a haircut I might not even like. I use the bathroom medicine cabinet mirrors that fold out to the left and right of me so I can see my profile and a bit of my back. It works a lot better this way because I can get it to look exactly how I want it in my head.

whocarz 08-16-2004 12:03 AM

Unless you're a flaming retard, giving yourself a simple haircut isn't hard at all. I've never paid to have my hair cut. My mom cut my hair when I was young, and now I cut my own hair. If you are just going to cut your hair short evenly all over, it is one of the most simplistic things you can do. I've graduated into cutting my hair at differing lengths, longer on top, shorter on the sides and back.

absorbentishe 08-16-2004 05:28 AM

I've been doing mine with clippers for about 5 years. I have a little trouble with the back, but I do a pretty good job, I think.

st33lr4t 08-16-2004 07:04 AM

depends on the cut. i used to use the number 2 around the sides and back and trim the top with scissors myself. i did that for years without any problems. now im sporting the fauxhawk and ive made a mess out of it lots of times trying to trim the sides and back with scissors...i always leave lines in my head.

hair grows back so who cares...just try it.

if you just use a buzzer go for it.....

get a buzzer made by WAHL thou....they are the best for do it your selfers....im sure a barber brand would be better but more expensive

mine was about 19 bucks

Nancy 08-17-2004 04:08 AM

I'm pretty good at cutting hair so I cut my own and loverboy's. It's great to save money that way :)

I don't mind paying a lot for having my hair done when ever I'm going to a fancy dinner party though because I can't do that myself..

AfterBurn 08-17-2004 02:26 PM

I don't know about cutting your own hair..If you mess up it's not like you can go back and fix it..I'd just goto a barber and get it proffessinally cut with no mistakes

Jolt 08-17-2004 05:21 PM

I've been cutting my own for 2-3 years or so...generally I just trim a little here and a little there every week or two.

I have actually had two complements on my hairstyle in the past year; since both came from embryonic gen-x types, I completely discredit both.

As long as my hair is long enough to hide the shape of my skull with its myriad dents and lumps, I figure I'm doing the world a favor. :)

SitizenVZ 08-30-2004 04:45 PM

If it's just a clippers job, than what's the harm? I'd be worried about anything more complex than that though. Just remeber to leave yourself some bangs.

jRuntlets 08-30-2004 07:43 PM

I've cut hair with Oster A5 Clippers (for Animals) You might want to go for a larger blade though. The A5's (Size 10) which we use to body clip horses will really give you a close clip. These clippers would proabily last you the rest of your life.

onetime2 08-31-2004 09:51 AM

I've been doing it since I first shaved my head for the Marine Corps a bit more than 10 years ago. Clippers, a number 2 or 3 guard for the sides, use the 3 or 4 for the transition from side to top of head, and I use no guard to trim the top by catching the hair in between my fingers to get a uniform level. I clean up the back and sides using a handheld mirror and the three mirrored doors on my medicine cabinet.

I can usually have it all done in the time it would take me to get out the door and start the car on my way to the barber shop.

tiltedbc 08-31-2004 12:17 PM

just like onetime2 said for me. It's nice being a guy sometimes.

The Phenomenon 09-01-2004 04:32 AM

Cutting your own hair sounds like a really really bad bad bad idea to me. You can't see properly and the angle that you will be working at will be awkward.

However if you are just going to shave your head with some form of electric clipper I guess its pretty easy, since you can screw it up. I personally would never pay to jet get that done to my hair. Ask a GF or summin to do it for you even. Just by an electric clipper.

anitra 09-01-2004 06:52 AM

i cut my own hair most of the time unless i want to change styles. i get compliments on my hair all the time. i wear it kind of wild though so mistakes are probably not noticed.
