10 Minute Mile

Well I did it today.

It was only on a treadmill but none the less. I am very pleased with the accomplishment!

I want to make the transition to road running soon, but it is alot more strenuous than a treadmill.

I am able to do this because of a Jiu Jitsu class I started 2 months ago! 2 days a week @ 90 mins each day mostly high intensity (for myself at least). Its a kick ass workout and HIGHLY recommend it to anyone! No injuries... yet! :) Cross my fingers. It helps that there arent any jag-offs in the class trying to act big by hurting people!

Also since starting Jiu Jitsu I have lost 20 lbs. Very Exciting. I may be skinny/thin (or whatever you want to call it) for the first time in my life yet!

Love reading about everyone else's success stories keep em coming!

Keep on pushing!

Kris.

Nice on that 10 minute mile. I get around 12 minutes myself on the treadmill.

Yea i started a Karate class awhile ago ,but i didnt get all that motivated to continue.

Keep up the hard work, it pays off!

pocon1 07-31-2004 12:16 PM

I find that it is easie to cover more mileage and speed on the road. Treadmills are monotonous, and it is hard sometimes keep up with its deliberate pace. When you are outside, you can set small goals for yourself. Just to that mailbox, or just over the hill.

Cowman 07-31-2004 01:56 PM

Yeah like pocon said, it will be easier to get a better time when running outside.

nein991 08-01-2004 11:08 AM

When you run outside you can see and
enjoy nature! No monotony.

dalnet22 08-01-2004 03:58 PM

There's more strain when running outside because you don't have the treadmill to keep you going. Because of this, it's not necessarily easier to run a faster time outdoors.

roadkill 08-01-2004 07:08 PM

I've alwasy enjoyed running on a tredmill more than outside.

ChasingAmy 08-01-2004 08:42 PM

dalnet22 is right.

At least in my case. 300 lbs wasnt meant to go for a jog down the road... at least not for more than a block that is hahahah...

Treadmills do half (or more) of the work for you! I can run for a few blocks then I start getting shin splints. I need to do some Tibialis curls I hear that helps lots.

Xell101 08-02-2004 06:23 PM

That's pretty good. My best so far is a thirteen minute mile, I weigh 288 lbs so doing that in thirteen minutes is quite a task.

ChasingAmy 08-02-2004 07:03 PM

Good job Xell101

Keep up the good work man.

anti fishstick 08-05-2004 07:24 PM

i prefer running along the highway or around a neighborhood. it's more interesting than a track or treadmill. last week, i beat my highschool mile record by over a minute at 9:30. it was really cool because i haven't been able to keep the endurance to run a mile at *all* until only recently.. now i can go up to 30 minutes long distance running, or maybe even more (haven't tried it yet..)

good job and keep having fun! i find that you feel a lot better after running, especially when you aren't bogged down by too much unhealthy foods. :)

sailor 08-06-2004 05:47 AM

Good job, yall! Glad to hear you are sticking with it and losing some weight! Keep watching the diet too--you have to both diet and exercise to lose weight efficiently. :)

mattevil 08-09-2004 04:50 PM

my record for the mile was 7:30 and I still didn't get that presidential thing in school(now in college so 10 miles sounds pretty good)

merc22 08-12-2004 01:41 PM

That's similar to my weight loss four years ago. I am down to 190 from 260. I started exercising with Taekwondo. I travel too much for my job though, I had to drop it. But it was a great start to training. Now I run marathons and my longest bike ride so far is 160mi.

Keep working on it. After a couple months of forcing yourself to attend, eventually you will become hooked. When training I always think about women, that helps. I also think about people I dislike, or just aggravating things in general to keep me going.

I didn't run outside until I ran on the treadmill for a year. Running outside is boring especially if you are new to it.

stonegrody 08-12-2004 01:52 PM

Good job! I run two miles a day on a treadmill and then I go trail running on the weekend. I definitely prefer the outdoors. I go for longer distances when I run outside because there's more to see and I don't get bored like I do on a treadmill. I hope you start road running soon! Let us know how you like it :D

joeb1 08-16-2004 09:31 AM

Great Job! Keep up the good work! About two months ago I started my exercise routine again. I get burnt out every once in a while. And have to take a break. We have a treadmill at home for rainy days. I find it really hard to run on it. Not physically. It is just soooo boring.
Give me the fresh air, and a change of scenery! Plus the dog loves going out with me. She just sits there and looks at me as if Im crazy for running inside.
Just remember to take it easy on the road. It is an easy transistion if you take it slow. The road will not give as much as the treadmill does. Your legs will feel different after you run on the road. I find some people get lazy on the treadmill. They let it do all the work. Think about your running stride and you will see what I mean.
Also try to incorporate some low impact exercises into your workout. This will save your joints from too much pounding. And if you are old like me. That is always a plus. Cycling, swimming and rowing are all good aerobic exercises. One thing I find that helps is to alternate your hard and easy days. Recovery time is important. Just listen to your body. You will know when to slow down. Or take a day off.

Paradise Lost 08-16-2004 12:53 PM

Just yesterday I thought 10 minute mile was slow... I head up to the Treadmill today to time myself, and yikes, 1 mile in 10:15... I am out of shape. *sigh* Guess I should have worked harder over summer. Oh well, congrats on the < 10 min mile!

CityOfAngels 08-20-2004 09:57 PM

One thing you might consider if you're a smoker is to quit. I used to smoke in high school, and at the time, my mile run was 8:15. 3 months after I quit, it was all the way down to 6:15! A whole 2 minute difference!

kwong_1978 08-27-2004 07:56 PM

Running is very addictive-The 'post-run' feeling is amazing. I prefer outside than threadmills. I run 4 days a week for about 1 hr each time. I live near the beach so on the weekend, I would jog topless on the boardwalk with nothing but the sun on my back, fresh air and my music. :D

Gabbyness 08-29-2004 06:18 AM

I would agree with the importance of the 'post-run' feeling. That's 40% of the reason I run, the other 60 is well, to stay in shape.

Get on the road as soon as you can, you work so many more muscles when you're propelling yourself instead of allowing the treadmill to do it!

xepherys 09-07-2004 12:34 PM

I would have to say that running outdoors is much better overall, paritally because of the way one moves on a treadmill. I can run a seven minute mile easily outside, and usually do my 2 miles in about 15 minutes. On a treadmill, I'm lucky to get an 8 or 9 minute mile. Outdoor running can be more stressful on your joints, but the fresh air and lack of confinement (sides of tread) allow most people to move at a better rate and for a longer period of time. Just something to think about down the road.

slimshaydee 09-09-2004 02:00 AM

I'm not sure exactly how long the run I do is, but i think it's around 2.5k, and that takes me <14minutes. I guess if I tried to run a mile I think I could do it in 7-8 minutes.

tarvuz 09-18-2004 11:23 PM

I ran a mile in 4:15 seconds when I was a senior in High School. Then I hurt my knee during XC my freshman year in College and never have been able to run since. So sad.

almostaugust 09-19-2004 06:09 AM

Great to see so many runners on here, especially those who do martial arts in conjunction with it. My muay thai class does a 5km (5000m) run after our saturday afternoon lesson. Im hoping to get my 5km under 20mins this week.

irateplatypus 09-19-2004 08:23 AM

i've if you mix up your running with...

1. long distance/fitness oriented bike rides it will improve your cardiovascular fitness. you can keep your heart at a higher BPM for a longer period of time because the anaerobic motion of your muscles isn't as big of a restraint.

2. sprints. a mile is approximately 1600 meters, so run a mile total distance broken into shorter sprints. i run three 400 meter sprints and four 100 meter sprints. training your legs to be quick and to be used to sensation of speed will dramatically decrease mile times.

this strategy has helped me quite a bit. good luck all.

xepherys 09-19-2004 09:38 AM

irateplatypus - GOOD suggestions. The Army recently changed their AGR (ability group run) type PT to match the sprints with what they call 60-120s... Sprint for 60 seconds, then WALK for 120 seconds. It really does improve burst speeds.

Y2KDREAD 09-20-2004 09:57 PM

I ran a 8:00 min mile, I was on the treadmill and just kept pushing myself until I made it. That nearly killed me, and I would like to be in good shape, but I hate going to the gym and I don't really know anyone who would make a good workout partner. I really need to just get off my and go, but it is so hard to do.

Mr Cassata 09-20-2004 11:37 PM

Excellent work! Keep on at it! :D

Anything worth having deserves a fight, and you're packing a mean punch in the second round! (The first round being the fact that you joined Jiu Jhitsu!)

As I can tell from experience, there will be periods when weight stays the same even if you're exercising and eating right. Just plough on through those times and the weight will start tumbling off again.

May I suggest lifting weights? It also gives a great feeling afterwards. On top of that, combining weight-lfting with a cardio session burns even more fat!

Y2KDREAD:

Force yourself to go to the gym. Once you're there, talk to the people. Make friends. I know from experience that it's intimidating to be in a room full of incredibly muscular guys, but many of them were once in our shoes! Most of them are very nice people, although our subconscious tells us that they're self-obsessed jerks! ;)

Just don't engage in conversation while they're doing the actual lifting of the weights, because people need concentration while lifting. You can chat while they're resting in-between workouts. I usually ask people what muscle groups are used in the workouts they're doing, and ask them for advice on certain techniques. I've made several friends that way. :)

Congrats. I've been working on my time by doing more sprints, etc [doing the Ready, Set, Go workout from a book] higher intensity, etc.

Keep up the good work!

skills1 09-21-2004 03:42 PM

I like to run on the treadmill and watch TV o.0 but I did just pass the 9 minute mile a few days ago.
