My Mom was hypoglycemic. I tend to have "hypoglycemic" episodes but my blood sugar doesn't flucuate enough to be classified as hypoglycemic.

My mom had it bad, if she skipped lunch or ate something high in carbs sugars she ended up feeling extremely tired in the afternoon and often had a bad headache to accompany it.

I find that if I gorge on chocolate or sugary drinks and juices that I can tell when I come off the sugar high and get extremely tired and a headache. I know it's not technically what you'd consider Hypoglycemic because it's takes more sugar or lack of food to give me the same feeling.

My Mom's Dr at the time put her on a no refined sugar diet. After many years on that she doesn't have trouble eating a little sugar. It gave her body the much needed break from processing a lot of sugar. Now she's able to eat some. She's still careful not to pig out at Christmas and such on candy and junk cause it will affect her when she eats a lot. She's not so sensitive now though.

This is all I know about it.

I experience symptoms every now and then. I can skip meals sometimes depending on what I have eaten for breakfast or lunch. But then sometimes it just comes on.

I remember one time I was sitting in class and started seeing black dots and almost passed out. After I ate lunch I started to feel better. And then another time I was on a road trip and I started to get dizzy and my hands were shaking and I just started to zone out. Had to make a quick stop to get me something to eat to get my blood sugar back up.

I don't have diabetes so I guess I'm lucky there. I just grab some food and I start to feel better shortly after.

yeah... if i don't get fed on a regular basis, i become a bit of a pain in the ass. i get grumpy and antisocial until i can get my blood sugar back to regular levels, so it's good for me not to miss too many meals.

Step number 1: Tell a doctor.
Step number 2: Do what the doctor tells you.

This is serious shit, and can't be diagnosed here. I speak as a diabetic.

I have hypoglycemia, and have been affected by it probably since I was a kid if the truth were known.

I have learned a number of things about it, but understand, they are things that effect me personally, I have no idea about other peoples afflictions.

The number one lesson I learned, was that I could not drink alcohol, at least not the way I did. Every beer was an almost instant sugar high, followed almost as fast by the predictable valley. Pretty soon the valleys were far worse than the temporary peaks.

I have found that stress plays probably the most important role in determining my ability to function normally. Intake of the proper nutrients, and in the proper amounts do a wonderful job in controlling the problem. However, regardless whether I have eaten properly or not, stress can, and will throw a hammer into the mix almost without fail.

Heres an example, and one you might be able to recognize in yourself. Anitra and I flew to Seattle a couple of years ago, and were on a very tight schedule from the time we left for the airport, until arriving at our final destination in Suquamish. The two days proceeding the flight, I ate randomly, and not really the proper foods...but was fine. After fighting bad weather getting to the airport, the flight itself, getting luggage (yep, mines always last), getting a cab, racing into the city to catch the ferry on time...hypoglycemia had set in on me big time. This was in spite of reasonable food intake, and no alcohol...stress, plain and simple.

Symptoms for me are being a little lightheaded, shakyness, being first hot, then flushed, then sweating. The best cure for me is to sit down, eat a single cookie, or something sweet, and have a piece of fresh fruit. A handful of peanuts will generally help also, but personally it takes an apple to get me back on track. Ten minutes, after the episode begins, I feel great, and ready to go again...

... I've always wondered if I was just really hungry or had something wrong with me. Often when I haven't had breakfast and it is about 3pm I get lightheaded, hot, irritable, and extremely trembly. Sometimes I feel like I'm about to pass out, and I also start sweating. :/

---Is this hypoglycemia?

Tehblaed...Sounds like it to me, but just from my personal experience, sure not a professional one. When that happens do you ever get something to eat? If so, does it help?

Either way in my opinion you should see your doctor. The test for hypoglycemia is simple, but takes a fair amount of time. The lab I go to gives you some really sweet liquid to drink, then check your blood about every 45 minutes for several hours...tracking what your sugar level does. Last time I checked there was no "pill" to fix it, has to be controlled by diet, and eating habits as far as I know.

there seems to be a very, very apparent and strong correlation between alcoholism and hypoglycemia.
I found this to be a great read on the subject:

It usually happens to me at least once a month and it seems to be caused by absolutely nothing out of the ordinary. If I eat like a candy bar or something along those lines, it will clear-up within an hour or so. What happens to me is that my peripheral vision begins to deteriorate, then I start seeing little black dots, followed by a mild headache and dizziness.

I've never had it checked out because I don't feel it happens enough to warrant a doctors visit and it can be fixed with a strong sugar intake.

Yeah I end up eating a candy bar (due to my mom telling me that was how to fix these sorts of problems) and it usually goes away. These occurances aren't very frequent and don't bother me all that much besides the initial freak-out. If they start happening more often when I get older and fat, then I'll see somebody about it :P
