Body Fat %

I was wondering. How do you find out what ur body fat% is? Is there a special way to figure it? out!!??

uh you get machines that kind of electrocute you and tell how how much body fat you got... dunno where, maybe fitness places or the doctor could tell you

Go to the doctors or gym, and they will measure the skin folds in various areas using a set of calipers to determine it.

Or, as apeman said, they can "electrocute" you using bioelectrical impedance.

those bmi things dont work, coz im 6'8" and 244lbs and im not overweight or obese. I carry my weight well (11% body fat), im built and athletic (Play minor league baseball). There are several ways to get body fat percentage. The true way is the water displacement test, but those are hard to find and do. The best is probably the calipers or electronic devices. You'r local gym should have something of that nature.

There are four "standard" ways of measuring your BF%:

1) The dunk test. You get strapped into a harness and dunked into a pool. How much water you displace vs. how much you weigh determines your BF% (a lb of fat displaces more water than a lb of muscle -- fat floats because it's less dense). This is the most reliable, and the most expensive, method. Expect it to cost $75 - $125 or so.

2) Skin fold calipers. Measures how much flab fits between the tips of the calipers at multiple sites on the body -- the more flab, the higher the BF%. This is accurate if done right. Easy to do wrong. Your doctor or gym may be able to do this (perhaps for a low fee - $10 or so). You can also buy a pair of calipers and attempt to do it yourself. 3) Cloth measuring tape. Compares measurements taken with a cloth tape (available just about anywhere for a dollar or two) against your height and weight. An example site that does this is here: http://www.healthcentral.com/cooltoo...s/bodyfat1.cfm

4) Inductance scale. Fat does not conduct electricity well; muscle does. So, you step on a scale with two electrical plates, and a current is sent through you. How well the current returns vs your height and weight determines your BF %. Tanita is the most well known scale maker of this type -- expect to spend $100+ for one. (The real problem with this method is your hydration level can wildly affect the reading, so it's best to measure things over time, rather than be able to measure your real BF% at a specific point in time.)

uhm... not to bust your bubble... but that test is pretty much bunk. it's a waist to hip ratio, and forarm ratio. go and get skinfold, BIA, or "dunk" tested. those, if administered by competent individuals, will give you a pretty accurate assessment. this one, not so much.

i'm saying, eat what you want, but don't base your bodyfat % off that test. tests like that one can give ideas as to general fatness and health risks associated (it's alot like BMI) but they won't give you a bodyfat %. i don't know how it gave you one with those two measurements, but i wouldn't trust it.

I agree. I have wider than average hips, so the waist-to-hip index they use is a little bunk, at least in my case.

There is no way to measure your BF% however, I will give you a good way to tell your BF%, look at your body!

4-6%- obvious striations in muscles, may be able to see tendons, visible 6 pack maybe 8 pack can see hip flexors and almost every muscle in the body with extreme definition

6-8%- visible 6 pack without flexing heavy definition everywhere, veins appear in almost all muscles flexed and some unflexed

8-10%- Genetically this one varies, some people have visible 6 packs some have no abs, the best way to tell is just the feeling, if you have heavy definition and when you flex your abs you can see them then your probaly in this range

12-14%- decent definition in most muscles, you can see splits and you look rather fit but you have no abdominals except maybe flexed you can see the top 2

14-18%-Some definition bit of fat, really no way to describe this your body appears to be in a sense connected, you appear how shall I say average looking, some veins show up in wrist etc (although this has more to do with a tan etc), if you cant see your abdominals flexed then your probaly in this range or above

18%+ - Really no way to describe this you have a belly and quite a bit of fat, but since genetics plays a crucial role in where the fat is spread its a bit random.

there is no accurate BF% measurment device, my scale reads my at 10% on some days and im really closer to 15% ide say, Ide love to be 10% but it is very obvious im not, calipers are the same way, there are VERY few people who have mastered them to perfection where they can get you within 1% however, the biggest problem is genetics, some people store fat in odd places calipers dont check they are run on the same general rules as the scale: estimations based on the average body.

Underwater testing: about accurate to 3% depending on your activity, the biggest problem is the way underwater testing is done is a very complex equation is used however, the equation is based on only 5 people and is once again based on averages, the equation is very close to accurate but it can still be off by up to 3% ide say.

Overall, the only real way to tell your BF% is abdominals since they tend to follow the BF% ratios the closest compared to other body parts which lose fat at different rates.

and no, set down the oreos unless you want cancer, you have any idea how many free radicals are in those gay things?

Hehe reki, I was gonna post that link but couldnt seem to find it, the biggest problem is its rather tough to tell the BF on some of those guys comparison wise because they are hella muscular and since their muscles are so well built they can really appear to be leaner then they are, however, good guide non the less ;p

I am a genetic freak from a long line of genetic freaks that carry almost all of our body fat on our stomachs. Not to mention, I have frightfully weak abs, thus the aforementioned visible test would never work for me. Even when I had rediculously low body fat that was well into the "six pack range" I barely had any visible abdominal muscles. I was running a ton, and eating an almost vegetarian diet due to a lack of funds for meat/fatty products. I wish I could dig up the picture from that time which caused my mother to gasp in horror.

I have participated in a body fat % study using all of the mentioned body fat methods here, and the Inductance and Dunk tests were the two closest together, while the tape measure test was quite a bit off, and calipers were low unless my stomach was used (a difference of plus or minus 3% or so).

Every test is working for me I think.. they all are working around the 8% range so I guess that's a good estimate for me..
