I'm off to Vegas

I'm off to Las Vegas next weekend for 5 days

I'm kinda stoked. We're going to see Madonna (my wife is a huge fan) and we're staying @ the MGM Grand

I wanna check out the Star Trek experience too. Anyone else have any other ideas on good stuff to do?

The Fountains at the Bellagio - just call first to make sure they're on.

Head over to the Stratosphere for the observation deck, if its a nice night. there's also a roller coaster, I am not an adreneline junkie so others thought this roller coaster was a little lame, I thought it was pretty cool.

Hoover Damn is an easy drive if you have 1/2 day to kill - it's a pretty impressive site.

Public Service Mode (also known as I'm a busybody)
Leave your ATM card in the room safe, set aside a specific amount of cash to gamble with and that's it. Don't get sucked into the excitement of the thrill of the win ( the free drinks while you are playing lower inhibitions, just say no) The odds favor the house, see all those beautiful hotels and showgirls, gamblers losses helped pay for that. Play to have fun, and just have fun.

Have Fun -- I'm not a gambler, but Vegas is such a fun town, awesome for people watching, the lights, the sounds, it's just fun.

I enjoy collecting the Hooker cards as you walk down the strip. I hope to have a full set before the end of the year...I still need the Cherry Bottoms rookie card though so grab one for me if you see one...

Seriously though, just walk up and down the strip and you will find plenty to do. Each of the hotels has something worth seeing or doing. Just pop in and look around. Tommy Rockers is a good fun bar off the strip if you want to get out of the casinos, its got a Jimmy Buffet thing going on.

Also, let me know if it stinks. My friends are hearing rumors that between the heat, trash, and homeless, it stinks there.

No, I'm not thread crapping, it's a serious question.

You absolutely must go to the Palms. I know you will have to catch a cab. It is worth it. Go.

If you have never been there and want to get away from the strip for some time, consider Hoover dam, or Red Rock Canyon or even the hour drive up to Mt Charleston.

If you decide that gambling is your thing, head out to Henderson. That's where the locals go, and the odds are much better than on the strip.

My parents are "professional" video poker players (seriously, last year they ran over 3 million bucks through the machines). They know the odds in practically every gaming house in Nevada, and the one they have settled on is Sunset Station in Henderson. My wife and I have witnessed them in action and it is a sight to see.

I've seen some of the "professional" video pokers player, and it is a sight to see. They are like savant's, staring at the screens, fingers moving at the speed of sound, and the cards just flying across the screens. Amazing really. I can't focus on the cards that fast let alone make the decisions.

I agree with Pook above, take in any one of the Cirque de Soleil shows, worth every cent. I have done Fly-away. You need some basic athleticsm, but it is really fun. Plan on spending a half day and dropping some money. But a novel adventure.

Even if you don't gamble, go and watch the high rollers at Caesar's Palace. Watching them gamble 100 to 250,000 per hand is amazing just for the spectacle of it all.

Touristy, but the "Downtown Experience" is worth doing, even if just to say you've seen it. Changes often and fun with a little beer on board.

Brewery at Monte Carlo has good beer and good food at reasonable prices.

The Pink Lady bar in the Hard Rock Hotel for the best margaritas on the planet. Great people watching spot too.

The sing a long bar in the N.Y. N.Y. hotel is a hoot and open very late.

Enjoy.

I was there two weeks ago and they had just opened the new monorail.
For a couple of bucks you can ride the full length of the strip.
And it's airconditioned, which is important as it was a blistering 108 deg F.

So much in Vegas and so little time.

You have to spend at least one day checking out the newer hotels. The Bellagio has great shopping and cool fountains out front. the Venetian has great shopping and a REALLY COOL canal that runs through the first floor. You can even take gondola rides!

Try to get over to the Old Strip as well. The Fremont Street Experience is a really cool light show that happens every 1/2 hour after dark.

Have fun!

November 1st I hit Vegas from the wintery Canadian north. It's gonna be a shock going from -40 to Vegas. Its my 4th time and my wife's never been, and ten days in Treasure Island is gonna be a VERY well earned honeymoon.

Maybe we can get our vows renewed by Elvis?

I think someone mentioned it but Hoover Dam is a nice break from the strip. I will kill most of a day but it's very interesting.

I've been to Vegas several times, and I must say the Cirque Du Soleil shows are something you'll never forget. Of the two there, Mystere and O, my favorite is O.

Hoover Dam is great and on the way back take a tour through the Nevada State Park called the "Valley of Fire". That's a fabulous car ride well worth the diversion. Red Rock Canyon for horseback riding is about 25 minutes from Mandalay Bay. That's also worth getting out of the city. Cheers...

MGM Grand is such a nice place to stay.

If you want to play blackjack at lower limits, head across the street to the Hotel San Remo, they have $5 tables pretty much all day and night. I think MGM/NYNY and the like all run minimum $10 tables, but I wasn't there during the earlier parts of the day. They might run $5 tables till 5 or so.

But, like you said, not much of a gambler... so... I'll suggest you go see the Fountains at the Bellagio... the Volcano at Mirage... Rainforest Cafe is yummy (inside MGM)... If you like rollercoasters, Stratosphere and NYNY are musts.

EDIT: Oh... if you are going to see the Star Trek Experience, visit Quarks as well... very cool bar. Benihana is good too, and close by, if I remember correctly.
