Ways of getting rid of a cold

I have got a cold, its terrible the usual symptoms: blocked nose, stuffy head, sore throat and general feeling lousy.
Does anybody have any ways of beating colds which are not known by the average joe...

i find having an 'inhalation' helps, boil some water, pour it into a bowl and add some olbus oil or vicks and inhale the smelly steam using a tea towel to keep the steam around your face.

Sounds like you are going the right direction. Make sure you're getting lots of rest, aand drink some juices- especially those with vitamin C, like orange juice! Hope you feel better! :icare:

Lots of fluids -- water will do nicely -- helps tremendously.

Zinc Losenges if you catch the cold in the early stages, and follow the directions (Zinc counteracts with Orange juice -so you can't takethe two together)

Cinammin -- especially in a bath -- helps relieve congestion

if u got the energy, go do some hardcore cardio to break into a sweat.

thanks, tho i would have thought cardio would be bad for a cold.

Traditional Chinese Medicine: Bullshit or Brilliance? You decide...

A lot of people think that diseases are caused by humoral imbalance, and if you get too much yin (dietary or otherwise) such as sugary foods or alcohol, your body lowers its defences on purpose so that you can catch a minor bacterial infection, and let the toxins inside of you escape as mucus. That's what a cold is supposed to be.
The way to speed up the process would be some yang. Starches and poultry are considered dietary yang, and yang is also associated with heat. So there you have the wisdom of the ancients-- the best thing for a cold is to just have some chicken soup :-p

i dunno if garlic helps but I like it, so a cold is a good excuse to eat more. And hot baths make me feel better.

The problem with the common cold you can only usually treat the symptons and just wait for your own body to get rid of the infection.

I second the ZINC!
Start taking those lozenges in mass quantities when you start feeling the cold. It does WONDERS!

Vitamin C, extended release, 1,000 mg 2-3 times a day. And then just deal with it. Prevention is much better. Keep hand cleaner (like Purell) around during the cold months and use it often. And a good vitamin like Twinlabs DualTabs keeps your imune system running well. Hit the vitamin C heavier when you are getting run down due to stress or lack of sleep or just feel you might have a cold coming on.

I haven't had a cold in over six years.

Work out. Even if you don't get better any quicker, your body will be stronger the next time a cold comes on.

Cowman 05-11-2004 04:45 PM

A cold is generally a virus..virus's, like someone else said, can not be cured..you can simply treat the symptoms and wait for it to run its course.

Working out is the worst thing you could do. Do not do cardio, do not lift weights. This will only make you sicker for longer.

In fact, a cold is often a sign that you've been working out too much and you need to cut back a bit.

The best thing to do is take a few days off...sleep, get fluids, take some halls/niquil/cammamil/garlic/whatever to treat the symptoms.

thanks all

during cold season, I usually drink about half a gallon of water a day and take 2 vitamin C tablets. and I eat two oranges everyday, I havent had a cold in years. A long, hot shower will clean out the sinuses

vitamin c & echinecea.
water & herbal tea & chicken noodle soup. (hearbal tea & chicken noodle soup are found to kill bacteria that causes colds.)
steaming hot bowl of water, towel over your head and breathe in deeply for about 15 minutes or until water gets cool. Possibly add 1-2 drops of eucalyptus, peppermint, pine, sandalwood, or lemon essential oil depending on symptoms.
lots of rest.
