Stupid bosses!
I have a job with an Internet company; I keep their servers running among other things. One of them crashed, so I worked on recovering everything today. By the end of the day it looked like it would still require another full day's work. I offered to keep working on it tonight, and take the day off tomorrow. Move tomorrow's 8 hours up a bit, basically. He said "It's not a critical server and enough things are recovered that it can wait till tomorrow, so finish it up then in case other things come up during the day." I was looking forward to finishing it tonight with no distractions and then get to have a 3-day weekend, but that's fine.
Until tonight that is. He IMs me asking why I haven't been working on the server and that he's disappointed that I wasn't. I told him "Umm, that's WHY I OFFERED TO HANDLE IT TONIGHT, but I'm just following your instructions." He said that he couldn't have me work on it tonight if it meant taking a day off tomorrow, but he was expecting me to fix it anyway (even though he didn't even ask me to!). What the hell?! I'm an employee, not a fucking charity! Oh and the reason it crashed in the first place-- it hosts customer websites. A while back I noticed that EVERY TIME someone signed up for a shell account, it was to try and hack the server. I strongly advised my boss against letting people have them, but he wouldn't listen to me. To non computer nerds, that's basically like someone saying "I want you to guard my house and make sure nothing gets stolen, but you can't lock it and you have to let anybody inside no matter who they are." So of course someone else got a shell account and managed to succeed in fucking it up this time. If he would have followed my advice, none of this would have happened in the first place! |

My take on the whole thing: talk to him about it. In the end, you might end up being fired, but if that’s the case, then what was the point working there, anyway? I’m sure that a proper conversation with the guy will clear things up, and if you use the analogy you just showed us, then I’m sure he will understand. If not, then just get the hell out of the company.

Calmly explain to him what you meant. He didn't understand what you meant when you offered to stay late, that's all. Simple miscommunication.
Incidentally, if you can't give people a shell account without them screwing up the server, you've got more problems than just a stupid boss. Are you patch-current? There shouldn't be any real risk associated with creating unpriveledged shell accounts. |
