Substitute for Caffeine?
I've never been a coffee drinker. I'll have a starbucks once in a while but the only reason i even own a coffee pot is for when i have company. But lately (the past couple years) I've noticed that I just can't wake up in the morning. I feel like I'm in a daze. And if i do have some coffee for the caffeine or some Red Bull, i feel great! After lunch if i get an expresso drink or something yummy like that, again I feel wired and it feels good! I never wanted to be one of those coffee whores running for the pot in the office kitchen every morning. I don't like the idea of putting caffeine into my body on a regular basis. But I have to admit, it makes a world of difference. Not only does it make me less groggy, but i feel happy, in a good mood, less lazy, etc.
So is there anything else i can do to get the same effect? I work out on a regular basis. Hard cardio several times a week for an hour each time. Like spinning classes and kickboxing. I also ride on the weekend when the weather permits. I lift weights here and there. So I'm pretty active. I also get plenty of sleep. 7-8 hours a night. I don't smoke, only drink occasionally. I eat ok. I watch my carbs and portions and try not to eat too much fat. I'm 5'8 and 158lbs. About 21% bodyfat (i'm working on this). So overall, i think i'm fairly healthy. So any advice? Should i just succumb to the caffeine? Or is there another way to full awakeness? (is that a word? ) |

caffeine
I used to drink red bull before hockey and softball games but wanted to stop because of the high sugar content.
Now I drink green tea with no sugar added. I drink between three and four cups a day. High in anti-oxidants. My leg is shaking so hard. Zip! Zip! Zip! |

I would agree on the green tea route, or whatever type of tea you like. Much less harsh on your body. Other than that, I have stopped drinking red bulls for that pick up, they just made me feel like my heart was going to blow up. Oh, and awakeness is a perfectly cromulent word.

Try morning Cardio?
I know for me it has resulted in my getting UP in time for it, and afterwards while I might be physically tired, mentally I'm alert. I'm incapable of sleeping in now. =p

I am another fan of Green tea, as well as white and black tea. All of them have about half the caffine as a cup of coffee, but come with the added bonus of supplying you with plenty of healthy antioxidents.

actually, one of the nice thigns about tea is that it actually has less caffiene than coffee... there's another caffiene like substance in it (it starts with a T, and if i weren't lazy i'd look it up) which is just as strong if no sronger than caffiene and i think it doesn't have some of t bad side-effects of caffiene. plus the anti-oxidants are good too!

Jasmine tea is usually just green tea that has jasmine flowers in it. Definitely good stuff.
Oh, and I'm pretty sure that green tea doesn't have as much caffeine as black tea, which has almost as much as a cup of coffee. But hey, maybe it's all in your head, right? |
