If you are traveling within the states, southwest airlines is the cheapest way to go.

I checked out soutwest airlines and they're the most expensive of the other airlines which I found ironic.

try expedia.com or travelocity.com

if you're a student, www.studentuniverse.com is linked to the orbitz database... but has special deals only available to students.

so you get the best from orbitz plus the other deals.

i'm surprised that Southwest was the most expensive. I can fly to LA and back for less than $200 bucks on that line.

In my experience the cheapest plane ticket can only be found with a few hours of digging. If you do find a cheap ticket on the bargain bin search places like orbitz, expedia, or travelocity, make sure to go to the airlines website itself and see if you can get it cheaper or at the same price for the day and time you want to fly. Often times the airline will let you customize which seat you want which you can't do with until the day you fly with orbitz, etc (at least as far as I know).

I recently planned a trip to Australia and the lowest flights we found was from a little site called www.airgorilla.com . We found tickets for $900 and something, at least $300 or $400 cheaper than anything else we saw. We have confirmed the seats with the airline (United!) so I am pretty sure they are a reliable company. I have no idea if this would work for everyone though.

Good luck! :)

Check out biddingfortravel.com. It's some sort of priceline bid coaching that my dad swears by.

orbitz works for me.

Orbitz, expedia, travelocity. For students, StudentUniverse and STA Travel.

I usually use expedia.com and travelocity.com, but thanks to some of the above posts, I tried studentuniverse.com and found the best prices I've ever seen.

I just used an online travel agent called IACE for my trip to japan.

I scored two Los Angeles/Tokyo roundtrip tickets (flying in late june and returning mid-july) for $435 each.

not bad at all.

Where are you going to start your trip from ? and which place do you want to go to ? California is a vast place with many large airports :D

if you're flexible on your flight times, try hotwire.com

Also go for smaller airports, if you can, which can save you a ton of money, ie fly into Orange County rather than LAX.

Some of the smaller carriers, ie Jet Blue, Song, Ted, ATA do not use the sites like Orbitz and Expedia, don't rule out those airlines, especially ATA, their prices are usually pretty good, and they bill themselves as a vacation carrier, so they go to most standard vacation destinations, direct.

Does anyone know if travel agents have their own special database of flights/package deals, or do they just browse around websites as well? I went in to a travel agency here at Glendale Galleria, (I've found that it is located in malls) and the quotes they gave us are basically the same as what I've found at hawaii.com and travelocity.
