Fingertip Pushups
Which is the correct form: Using the tips of the fingers (like when you type) versus using the pads of the fingers (like taking a fingerprint)? When you use the tips your hands look like they are typing (natural curvature). But when you use the pads, your fingers are bent inwards which I heard puts more stress on your joints and could cause problems for you in the future. Anyone have opinions?

when my grampa does his 40 pushups a day he does them on his finger pads so they look bent inwards... hes been doin pushups for a long time... and doesnt seem to have any problems with his hands so far...
|
I see no hard in either way. I prefer the padded way.

I'll pull a britney spears...
put me in the padded column |
Ok cool. I do it the tip way and I can only manage a few. I'm going to see if the pads hurt my hands. I'm just afraid of getting arthritis. Thanks y'all.

I do em on my fists... like resting on the front part of a fist. It helps me avoid hurting my wrists
|
I also am a fan of fist pushups... I cant stand doing them on my fingertips
|
btw... what ARE fingertip pushups ? :)

Bubbles,
Fingertip pushups are just like regular pushups, except you distribute the pressure over your fingertips instead of over your whole hand. Basically, all that is touching the ground is your fingertips or the pad of your fingertips. |
oh yeah, can't this be a little unhealthy for so much weight lies on your fingertips.. ?!
|
I used to do fingertip pushups all the time (on the pads), and I never had a problem with my fingers hurting. Just don't overdo it, when your fingers get to "that point" just stop and do regular or fist pushups. The whole point of fingertip pushups is to make your fingers stronger, and it works well (I had a monster grip).

What's the difference? It just seems more painful, like doing them on your knuckles or whatever.
Isn't the point of doing pushups to build chest/shoulder muscles? If you do them on your fingertips/knuckles/palms, isn't still working the same muscles no matter what? |
i think the difference is that youve gotta distribute your weight more carefully while doing them. It works out your hand strength too. Im a big fan of rotating push-up styles. Wide pushups, diamonds and dive-bombs, are all really good alternatives to your standard up and down.
