Starting Smoking

Why did you start smoking, when you did?

Just wondering. I've been addicted to one or two things in my life, but I've avoided that particular beast.

Eugeni 03-25-2004 03:01 PM

Because it felt exciting. We were kids, it made me feel like I was an adult person. I no longer smoke.

diddagirl 03-25-2004 08:01 PM

Because I thought it was cool. Thats literally the reason . I was 14...how pathetic.

January 27,1981 the day I entered basic training.

Stopped January 13, 2000.

All the money wasted. I could buy a new truck, house, wheeler...

All the time it was sucking the life right out of me.

Girl I was seeing did it.
You know that line about licking an ashtray? Yeah, well, you worry about it less if you do it too.

I actually genuinely liked it. It never made me cough, it was relaxing, it went great with drinking, it was a very social thing. I've been smoking for more then 3 years now and i'm just now starting to have regrets. But I think I'm the exception.

I agree with iccky. I genuinely enjoyed it. It felt good. My friends all smoked. Plus, there's a strange sense of comradery between smokers. It was a lot of fun.

I've smoked socially since 5th grade, or so, and started smoking about a pack a day a little over a year ago. It escalated to a pack and half (sometimes 2-3 on a Friday night) quickly.

I just decided to quit in the last 3-4 weeks, and I had no idea how hard it would be. You don't realize when you first start exactly how easyit is to get addicted...it's the quitting that's tough.

I go through about a pack every other week. I only smoke when I'm feeling particularly stressed, or to help me fall asleep. Its relaxing. Started shortly after I began school, unless you count 18 years of second hand smoke prior to that.

agball 04-12-2004 06:28 AM

15 though it was cool, still doing it 17 years later. Only a pack every 3 days. What a loser I am!!

Stompy 04-12-2004 11:37 AM

I started because it was fun. I enjoyed smoking.

I stopped because it's bad for you, but it was still fun and enjoyable :D

Started to fit in with the cool "druggie" crowd in high school(This was the 70's!)

Continued cause I enjoyed it, and all the girlfriends smoked.

Quit when I saw the lungs of a cadaver that died of lung cancer. All thick black mud where pink healthy tissue should have been.

8 years smoke free!

When I saw this thread I thought you were going to ask for advice on how to start.

I never got into a habit of smoking. I had breathing problems as a kid and stayed away. Its funny though, being a focussed athlete i have seen many other top athletes who smoke and get along fine. It always amazes me.

Mephex 04-14-2004 10:25 PM

Because I was raised to seek an external control, and I felt that if I smoked, it would bring me closer to being the person I was supposed to be.

Kewpie Dan 04-19-2004 07:11 PM

i started smoking to impress a girl, it worked, but when we broke up i kept the habit.

i ended up smoking for about 3 years straight, and have been trying to quit ever since. i'm at a point where i never buy a pack and i only smoke if someone offers and half the time i pass.

but i usually end up smoking when i am super stressed or drinking, the occurences of which are decreasing...

It was just boredom for me... it was the middle of the night, I was with a friend who lives in a boring neighborhood where all that's open at that hour is the supermarket. So we bought some cigarettes and laid on her lawn looking at the stars, and watching our smoke drift up towards the sky... it was pretty cool...

In a way, I was doing it to impress her.. the sad part there is I was nineteen when this happened  lol... I'm just glad I never got addicted.

yournamehere 04-24-2004 10:09 AM

For the same reason I quit - all my friends were doing it.
