Road Cycle Training (Blue Ridge Mountains-VA)

I plan on biking with my team through the Blue Ridge Mountains near Monticello in a few weeks. Not sure how many of you ride bikes out there in that area, but I would like to hear from anyone living out in that region and tell me the road conditions. (ie; potholes, road grit, surface deviations, texture of roads (smooth, moderate or rough)

I understand last year a friend cruised from the summit towards the base for quite some period of time maintaining an average of 45 mph and maxed out a little over 60mph. I fear speeds over 50mph, so i'd like to hear from locals near Monticello, even if you don't bike.

Thanks,

Pom
