Ireland
What are some good sites?
Particularly in Dublin |
good sites? like web sites? travel sites?
I think you need to elaborate a bit more...are you referring to food? tourist things to see? off the beaten path? what? |
What exactly do you want to know?
I'm a Dubliner and will be delighted to share info with you... Mr Mephisto |
I was only in Dublin for two days and did not get to see all that I wanted to. You need to see Trinity College and while there go to the library and see the Book of Kells (the oldest existing copy of the gospels dating back to the 7th century). Near there is a park that if my memory is correct is called St Stephens's Green. It is worth a walk through. Get some food and beer in the Temple Bar area. We ate at Gallager's Boxty house the second night because the first was so good.
Don't try to see all of Ireland in anything less than 3 weeks. I was there for 11 days and concentrated on the west coast between Killarny and Galway; and I think that was too ambitious. I would recomend trying to fit in the Dingle penninsula in the Southwest corner. |
Well, next week two friends and myself will be spending six nights in Dubin. We havn't really got an adgenda, just getting off the plane and taking it from there. Going to try and see as much as we can.
As far as things to do and see...probably Trinity College, Dublin Castle, Guinness Brewery, Kilmainham Jail. Any Ideas? We'll spend some time in Temple Bar area...but we dont want to be drunk the whole time. Any specific pubs you recomend? I want to here some music. We also plan on taking a train or something into the country for a day. How is the city transportation? Would you recomend Bus, taxi, walking? This will be the fist time i've been on an airplane. Any other advice will be appreciated! |
I'm looking forward to moving to Ireland for a year to work/travel. Hopefully anyone out there can give me some info on things I'll want to try/keep an eye out for/do when I'm there. Mr. Mephisto, give us some inside tips :)

Drink lots and lots of fluids (and not alcohol) Dehyrdration on an airplane is a killer. DVT on a plane is a real killer -- stretch your legs often Don't mouth off to security, they don't like that much Don't mouth off to customs, they really don't like that. |
I would recommend going to see Galway if you can. As much as I loved being around Dublin (and dont get me wrong, I love it there) I enjoyed some smaller places outside the big city. Galway and Killkenny were 2 of my favorite spots to go too.

wasn't there a dumb british student who made a bomb joke going through US customs in the states? maybe it's on the "Dumbest thing done while travelling" thread already... i think she got let off with 3 days in jail, 1000 dollar fine and having to write a letter of apology |
Wicklow and Glendolough (pernounced Glendalock) are both beautiful countryside visits. Tour busses leave from Dublin and take about an hour+ to get there. Definitely worth the time for any age traveler.
