Foods for packed lunches?
Hey
About 3 times a week I have to eat a lunch that I've packed the night before and taken to univ with me, and Im worried that im not putting in the greatest foods. Could anybody offer up some suggestions of things that are quick to pack, will stay edible and tasty over a period of 3-4 hours in a backpack, and are high in protein/low in fat? or, if you take pack a lunch with you as well, could you just list what you put in it? Thanks alot for any suggestions.. (also if anyone can suggest some nice sandwiches that would be cool too :P )

Icepacks are really good things to have, because most healthy foods don't stay quite as french in backpack conditions. With an icepack you can keep veggies and yogurt and tuna sandwiches, all healthy things, without them spoiling. Tuna and Turkey sandwiches are good but if you want a tuna sandwich I suggest making your own- when you buy then they tend to have too much mayo on them.

for lunch I normally lack any fridge etc so I just get a small bag and put 10 strawberrys in it then put about 1/4 a lb of turkey or chicken from a deli in another bag then I pu them both in a big ziplock and put around 10 icecubes in it and they stay cold for hours (im dieting so you can put more of course)

Hey Cowman-
I pack lunch 3-4 times a week- usually I take a pear or apple, and a granola bar or Luna bar or something like that- easy quick-to-eat good for you stuff. As far as sammies go, I'd try pita bread with deli meats. Some places here sell individual size tubs of ranch or mayo so you can add that when you're ready to eat whatever sammich you choose (keeps the bread from getting soggy). Another good-for-you suggestion? Baby carrots, they keep even if they're in a backpack. And a bottled water- stay away from the soda! good luck, happy eating!

i bring to my lunch to work everyday more or less.
I'm trying to eat a bit healthier so i ditched white bread and i'm starting to bring homemade wraps. I stuff veggies, some turkey and i bring an apple. If i'm ultra lazy i bring instant noodles (provided you have hot water available). |

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, but can I ask: For those of you who have, say a turkey or chicken sandwhich, do you cook the chicken/turkey like a week before and then just cut it up as you need some for sandwhiches, or do you buy processed pieces in the grocery store? I've heard that the processed stuff is filled with preservatives, and thus not that great for you.....but I could obviously be wrong?

Hmm, ya most of the time the preservatives arent to great for you, I go to Vons, and as I understand their turkey/chicken is pretty good for you, I may be wrong however, I never really gain sodium weight from their turkey after I eat it. I asked the guy at the deli whos a friend and he said its 98% fat free and low in sodium, also they dont make it outta the gelatine cubes like most places they get new turkey/chicken every day or 2 days and its fresh so they dont need the gelatine, or at least thats what they do here.
Cooking the chicken/turkey before would work however the main issue is most of the time it tastes better heated and alot of us lack a microwave hehe. Good to see your making healthy alternatives, isnt much advice I can really give except eat alot of veggies/meats for healthy eating, and keep track of sauces etc, only use a sauce if you know your gonna run short on calories in the day. (however fish oils/flaxseed oils/olive oil is good to have a bit of in a day since its the best fat you can get) |

instead of messing with icepacks... just keep some small bottles of water in the freezer. Put it in the bag when you're off in the morning, and you'll have cold food AND cold/partly frozen water to drink!

How about yogurt? High protein, relativly low cal, and tasty.
I like the brand Colombo (sp?), and Dannon is always ok too. I buy packs of turkey for sammiches as well. Rather high in sodium, but it works.
