Broken Wrist?
Ok, well, my dieting is sorta slowed down thanks to a softball game (lol), running to third base and hit a puddle of water, fall on my back and braced the fall with my wrist as a natural reaction, I lived with it for a few hours (didnt want to say I got hurt in a softball game with some kids and a few friends then felt it was hurting to much and went to my moms friend whos a doctor, well lo and behold I broke it and cant do any intense exercise for 6 weeks or until doctor tells me.
so my question: does anyone have any advice on how to pass time/any exercises you can do? I know I shouldnt move much however being crippled for a month and a half is gonna suck and I may as well make the best of it (im bed ridden until monday since a orthapedic is gonna look at it and see if I need a cast etc) The only thing im doing right now is eating alot of protein and walking a bit (dont want my body to use a ton of muscle to repair the break rather it use fat for energy so hoping high protein will help. oh ya by the way, the break is a fracture on the growth plate (dangerous spot since if I break it any worse I have to get heavy surgery, and my arm will be shorter then the other one as I understand which would cause some weight lifting complications >< |

he said you can't do any intense exercise? that doesn't really make much sense... it's your wrist. check with the ortho, you should be able to run/cardio all you want. you may even be able to do minimal weight lifting depending on what it is (machines, legs no prob, no free weights).
i busted my leg and pelvis in a car accident, i was doing rehab two weeks later (would have been sooner, but hospitilization and all). my pelvis still wasn't completely healed and i was on a recumbant bike an hour a day doing 18-20 miles. so there's gotta be something you can do. the doc should be able to give you more specialized options and what not.

That sucks Cait, it sounded like you were doing really well. I noticed you started around the same time I was really getting back into fitness.

Ouch. Sorry to hear it. A wrist is a bad one spot to injure. Basically you cant do anything with that arm which pretty much eliminates upper body. But I dont see why you wouldnt be able to bike / cardio and such. It shouldnt be too bad...

Thank you for the support and I guess I miswrote what I said, I broke my wrist on the growth plate, which is the worst spot you can break any bone in your arm on because if you rebreak it pretty much, your screwed since your arm just sorta hunches back and you have one arm thats longer then the other (which wouldnt help with weight lifting)
Pretty much the reason I cant run etc is because SHOULD I trip on accident it would be a shitload of surgery etc since its a pretty good chance that it would break my growth plate right in half. However, I seem to be recovering quickly for some reason, been broken near 3 days yet it doesnt even hurt to bad anymore, so Im hoping that all these years of eggs milk and caltrate pills will pay off with a quick recovery. Just doing machine leg weights and 3 MPH walking with a few elevation. I seem to be losing alot more weight then normal, Im just hoping im not losing muscle, my body fat went up by .5% and my weight went down 2 pounds, however, not sure if its because im in a brace and my wrist is totally scrwed up looking. Oh ya, by the way hannukah, im not sure what the orthopedic will say im going to him on tuesday to see if I will be able to recover in just a brace or if I need a cast, the guy I went to knows what hes talking about he just doesnt want me to fuck up my arms since I dont have much protection there with just a brace (orthpedic takes so long to get into, but hes a friend of family so can get in on tuesday instead of .. next april lol) Ill be back to dieting intensly soon >< Last edited by cait987; 02-27-2004 at 04:23 PM.. |

i wouldn't do any intense running.. maybe it can affect the healing process what with all the bouncing up and down thus not allowing the bone to set??
when i broke my wrist i was just a vegetable.. no matter what you do, your forearm of the broken wrist will lose muscle mass. can't do much about it. i suppose you can do what other ppl suggest and just do some walking to stay a bit active. |

just remember there's no reason you shouldn't be able to do a stationary bike and weight lifting for your lower body on seated machines. not as good as free weights and full body work, but better than nothing.

At the risk of "making baby jesus cry".
Try Atkins. 2 weeks of induction. Melt 15 lbs of fat off and feel better too. Take your supplements. Keep exercising. You should still be able to walk locally, in the mall or on a treadmill. Climb stairs.

Thank you for the advice Boo, but I already have my entire diet planned out and Im only 35 pounds off my goal so ide rather do it at my own pace.
Wow shit just realized im only 32 pounds off my goal today ! lolz 6 months ago I was 270 pounds and now im 207. Never even realized it but the last time I added it up I was at like 225 ^^ 175 here I come as soon as I get this brace off cant wait. I have just been fueling my metabolism lately eating 200 calories every 2 hours or so and have been losing 3/4 a pound a day of mostly fat (unless getting 300g of protein still = muscle loss (although ive probaly lost a bit anyway but hey) Sad to admit but I think breaking my wrist has refueled my motivation, I cant wait to recover so I can just do HIIT sessions and weight lift again. So funny, most people would cringe at the thought of exercising but im so bored lately just wandering around I cant wait to recover and finish my entire goal off and then rework my diet to bulk a bit to help keep the weight off if I ever want to indulge at a meal (havnt had a cheat meal since the superbowl) Thanks Boo, not sure something just clicked got a huge adrenaline/confidence rush realising how close I am to my goal ^^ |

cait987 - Sorry about your injury, I have broken my right wrist 2x. It sucks. Keep an aye on your goals. Everyone needs to get to them and very few take the same road.
I started induction again today and also realize how close to my goal I am. I really don't have a set weight to hit. Based on where my weight is hiding, I think somewhere in the 10-15 pound range. The judge will be my old jeans and how I am feeling. I have not read alot about the last pounds and Atkins, so I am trying it and adding weights and treadmill to my walking and just staying active. You can also work your middle and back.
