Streching and ibuprofen?
I've been using a streching/toning videotape with my wife. The exercises leave you pretty tired immediately afterward, but almost exactly 24 hours later, the muscles start screaming.
I was wondering if taking ibuprofen or similar to reduce this soreness would be counterproductive to the overall goal of toning? |

There have been studies only recently saying that taking ibuprofen may indeed be counterproductive the regeneration of muscle, as it may interfer with the rebuilding process.
To what extent, no one is SURE. But the article I read cited a 20% decrease in growth. |

That's about what I thought. I tried some more Googling, now that you gave me some more keywords, but couldn't find anything really applicable. I did learn a new term, however: DOMS, or "delayed-onset muscle soreness". So, not a total loss!

EleqTrizi'T: much better than my Google results, thanks very much again!
JStrider: That's what I had been doing all along; I came from a family that medicated as little as possible. My wife's family, however, sees any little thing wrong as an opportunity for medicine/supplements/vitamins. I'm looking for the balance in the middle. So, I had been wondering if this was one of those areas where the miracles of modern medicine could help. Doesn't look like it, so I'll look at this as "good pain".

DOMS = muscle damage which can be helped with light stretching, hydrotherapy, light massage, light movement. It is damage and anti-inflammatories will impede the recovery process.

Soreness means you had a good workout. It will slowly go away over time as your body adjusts. And that's when it's time to change your workout!! Plus, a little extra protein immediately after a workout helps reduce the lactic acid.

Sorry thingstodo
Another myth that really needs killing DOMS = muscle/tendon damage .... It is essential to further growth when combined with many other variables .. however ... Many are not "sore" after a workout and still improve, others spasmodic pain if new angles/exercises etc are used and others still are sore after every workout. Soreness is more an indicator of your genetic neural/muscle structure than anything to do with training results. Sore or pain does NOT = results
