Best Gym
What is everyone's favorite gym?
Personally, I like 24 hour fitness. The rates are great, the people are helpfull, the equipment is good. The only real problem is the crowd after rush hour, but I go early morning when there is virtually no wait on any of the machines. |
im lucky enough that my work just built a 30 thousand dollar gym for us.....24 hour access no wait for anything because most the time its just me or one other guy there....
only thing that does suck you cant do anything where u need a spotter most of the time |
The new YMCA's are pretty good. New as in built in the last 10 years new (the old ones are ugly, and smell like cat pee), they have decent equipment and usually have pools, hottubs, sauna, steam room and all kinds of programs to boot.

I go to a World Gym; basic bodybuilding and cardio equipment. World is a franchise, so they're all different. But the one I go to is owned by an old bodybuilding champ whose motto is "Get Serious!", and he runs a serious gym. Nicely painted, equipment in good repair and quickly fixed if something happened, always clean, always somebody running a carpet sweeper around or wiping down things out on the floor or in the locker rooms. These are signs to look for in a good gym, especially if it's a franchise or a local operation. No use having a lot of fancy equipment if it's broken or doesn't work right.

LA Fitness is a lot nicer (in all aspects) then 24 hr. Oh, and it has a lot better looking clientele.
|
I used to use Golds...they sold out to Beyond Fitness where I live. Beyond Fitness was horrible and I switched to Pulse Athletic Club. Now they have been bought out by Golds! :)
This Golds is a lot nicer and less crowded than my old Golds. I think a lot depends on the area you are in. |
I think each gym is what it is. There is a gym down the road that I used to go to that in the past 10 years has been a Worlds, Golds, 24 hour and is now a Bally's but its the same damn gym, just under different management. I haven't noticed that much of a difference in the various gyms that I have been too, seems that some were good and some were bad, regardless of whose name was on the sign

Larkins Hall... because its free and 2 minutes from the dorm.

Haha, same here. I have to say Mount Mitchell gym......because it's free, and 30 seconds from the dorm. :) |
The only gym around; the university gym.
|
I'm happy with New York Sports Club. They're expensive, but they constantly get new equipment in.
|
There are plenty of great gyms out there...and plenty that stink. Depends on what you are looking for, how much you can afford and always how good the staf is.
I've seen a lot around the country [part of my job] and this one really stands out, if you can afford the $21,000 initiation fee! http://www.houstonian.com/index2.htm My favorite has always been Equinox in NYC if I could afford it. |

A track..going around the machines. hahah what a great setup :/ I can imagine getting out of the seat of a machine and being nailed by someone running around the track.. |
Also from the houstonian
$65/hr for personal trainers!! I work out about 8 hours a week..thats over 500 bucks a week :O truley for the rich.. |

My conclusion... Track around wieghts = bad! |
I use Lied, the gym here on campus. It's close and it has nice equipment. It does get crowded though- especially Mondays and Fridays between 4 and 5.

I go to the YMCA. The prices are reasonable and they have some extras (like a pool) that other gyms don't have.
|
Currently I go to our universities gym. Next semester, I'm moving halls... and my gym will be 2 floors down ;)

At www.fitathletic.com the trainers are also $65/hr. That's why i don't have one. ;)
But this is because the gym gets a cut. |
University gym all the way! Just a quick 5 minute walk and I'm there- it's right outside my dorm window, and has all the right equipment. And, it's paid for by tuition, so it's not necessarily free, but if you aren't using it you're losing money (good reason to go :))
|
Personal Trainers at my gym cost $65/hr more or less (depends on how many sessions you sign up for).
In fact, they called me last week to see if I've met all my goals or not, and to see if I was interested in personal training. I told them I was interested, but my bank account wasn't and tried to haggle a deal. They didn't go for it. Other than that, I have nothing but good things to say about GoodLife Fitness. The facilitites are clean, and they have all the equipment and programs I could ask for. Some of the locations even have free DVD rentals for members, that's a pretty nice touch. |
