Had ECT?

If so tell me about it or if you know someone who had it how did things go for them?

Harshaw 02-21-2004 12:07 AM

Ummm what is an ECT?
It is possible I know someone who had one. But I'm not sure what it is.

Is that the same as electroshock therapy?

moonstrucksoul 02-21-2004 12:09 PM

i can't remember if i had "Electroconvulsive thereapy". but if i did i woulldn't remember how it was. but i don't know of anybodywho has had it.

i don't mean to joke with you, is this a serious issue?

ECT electroconvulsive therapy same as electroshock therapy I guess.

Did it change things for the better?

I've heard it is a last resort for treating depression when various combinations of pills and therapy haven't been effective. It's not quite the quack practice as it's portrayed in "A Beautiful Mind". Apparently after treatment your memory isn't very good but it eventually comes back.

Isn't this the same thing as in Requiem For a Dream? Like, as a drug rehab treatment?

I'm not positive though.

Oh christ....Requiem for a Dream. That movie makes me cry every god damned time.

ECT is what they gave Sara Goldfarb, yes...although I do believe it was exaggerated for the movie.

To clarify, the treatment in "A Beautiful Mind" is insulin shock therapy. This is when a patient is given enough insulin to induce convulsions and/or coma. Not quite the same thing.

I watch too many movies...

it's a last resort and effective treatment for depression. I know someone that was treated using it and lost 5 years of memory.

I know someone who had it after all else failed and it actually worked okay. Not total transformation, but slight improvement. At least medication started working.

ECT = Closed Head Lobotomy.

Their point being that a high current passed through the skull will force the brain to, in essence, "reboot" for lack of a better term.

I've heard arguements both ways, but I have seen more credibility on the 'no' side.

I would be more willing to allow a family member numerous courses of drugs, well before I would consider ECT.
