4 questions (meats mostly, and some weightlifting)

Well my diets been going good, well except the 2 1/2 pounds I gained overnight from quite a bit of salt (salmon sure has alot of salt when canned and tastes like crap lol), weight lifting, and the stair master I just got.

But I have 4 questions all pretty important/whatever you want to call it:

#1: Ok heres a very ... odd question and would be nice if could get a explanation. I really like steak, and since its a good source of protein and some fats (I dont get much) I eat a 6 - 8 oz. steak every couple days, however, the next day I almost always lose 1 - 3 pounds, whether I exercised alot or little, my weight almost always goes down post steak eating days and I rarely gain it back, anyone got any clue as to how this works?

#2: Ok, I was talking to someone and somehow tuna came up and I said its good but has alot of mercury, then chicken came up and I didnt know that there was anything bad about chicken however the person said it has alot of hormones in it and im curious, are the hormones in chicken bad or does anyone have any opinions about it or got a link? Ive heard about mercury poisoning but never anything bad about chicken.

#3: Can anyone list some good back/ab weight lifting exercises? Ive been exercising legs/arms alot however, All I really do are crunches and pull-ups for my abs/back so im curious can anyone list a few other good exercises for those places?

#4: Does anyone have a rough estimate of how much weight salt makes you gain/lose in water? Im hoping the 2 1/2 pounds I gained were from the extra probaly 1000 mg of salt I had yesterday from the salmon + alot more chicken/turkey, I know salt makes you retain water but how much?

Do you do traditional crunches, or do you alternate side to side, elbows to knees? The workout this way is much more intense and targets a greater range of muscles. Doing crunches against a machine that offers resistance also targets the lower abs and lower back to a great extent.

When I work out, my greatest target area is the traps (the muscles around the shoulders and base of the neck.) I feel that a large, defined set of traps gives one of the most muscular, powerful appearances, which is why I focus on them. To work them out, I do a lot of shoulder shrugs with free weights, as well as rocking side to side while keeping the hips relatively still. I've noticed that these two exercises have done wonders to my upper back without me even noticing until recently.

Chickens are given all sorts of things, but so are beef cows. So all I can tell you is, any drugs or hormones that they give to chickens are no worse than the ones you're getting in your beef and dairy. For what it's worth.

As for losing weight after eating steak, I'm sure everybody would like to have that problem. But if it happened _every_ time you ate steak, you'd probably weight 43 pounds now, wouldn't you?

As for ab exercises, I personally like crunches done as pull-downs at a weight cage using a knotted rope as a handle. I also like to do them slowly, partly because they're more intense that way and partly to avoid any sudden stresses on the back.

The hormones in chicken will have no effect on you. I saw a documentary on this in school, they're chicken horomones that have nothing to do with humans.

As for the steak weightloss, its gotta be a coincidence. Steak isn't really that healthy for you, especially not enough to make you lose weight. It sounds like your using a scale every day, which is a bad idea. Try cutting it down to once a week if your gonna use one.

Thank you for the responses, and ya I know steak isnt to great for you Nimble but it has some fat (which I get very little of since chicken and veggies/fruit are pretty much my entire diet its pretty lacking) and alot of protein and I dont want to lose alot of my muscle mass while I lose weight so I get alot of protein, im only 35 pounds off from my target weight, its slowing down alot but Im not gonna give it up, Ill probaly change my diet alot once I finish since Im gonna need alot more calories for muscle mass building then Im getting now.

Thanks for the chicken info also, I was just worried that there was something really bad about it, the only side effect Ive really had with tuna/chicken is my urine smells like it >< but it goes away if I dont eat any so im not to concerned.

Off to go to a party and sit there watching everyone eat junk food while I wander around talking to people later all

If you eat beef, which you should in balance, eat tenderloin. It is extremely low in fat, as is pork tenderloin. Fortunately, they are both the most flaverful and tender.

For the back, mix an assortment of dead lifts, squats (which hit the lower back, butt and hams), back extensions, lat pull downs (wide wide and narrow grips) and rows, mixed with a machine, cable or dumb bell. When I say mixed, I mean change them around from day to day. Try to always do a pull down of some sort, row, extension and lower row each time you do back.

Back is important because it holds everything else together, creates balance in all you are doing and is a large muscle group, meaning it help turn up your metabolism.

are you trying to lose or gain weight? Sounds like lose but I cant tell from your posts.

Anywho,
Chicken ( I probably eat anywhere from 10-15 breasts a week) and tuna (mercury poisoning is rare and i think its only if you eat a ton of tuna a day everday) are great
Red Meats should be limited to 3 times a week and no more than twice a day.
Eat lots of whole grains, barely, oats, brown rice those are great for you.

As for you losing weight when eating red meat, I have heard from some people that their bodies react differently to red meat consumption. Some people are able to eat a ton and lose weight because their bodies absorb the nutrients differently.

Keep up the good work

Salt, I can answer this from an experience JUST last week..

I bought a package of slice salami. 50 pieces, with 5 pieces containing 100% of a days worth of salt. Weighed myself at 3pm and was 239. Same time then next day, 246. Had eaten nothing large since the day before, nothing abnormal. Until this day, I was losing about 1/2 lbs per day. Bowel movements were all equal.

So... today I'm back to 238. It was just water weight.
